ryegrass vs. bentgrass by Dale Engman, Golf Course Superintendent
We would like to take this opportunity to explain the very interesting look we have on the fairways of Holes 12 & 18. If you have played recently you undoubtedly have noticed the many white spots showing up on these holes. This is creeping Bentgrass we are removing from the fairways. Although we love creeping Bentgrass on our greens, over time it has escaped and has become established on most of our fairways. What starts out as a small plant grows into a rather large patch that is distinctively different from our preferred Ryegrass fairways. While aesthetically unappealing it is also a playability issue. Creeping Bentgrass tends to be puffy and very grainy without proper management while the Ryegrass is compact and more upright. Our goal is to keep pure stands of Ryegrass in our fairways for as long as possible. Occasionally new tools become available to help us do just that.
In 2012 a product entered the golf market that eliminates creeping Bentgrass from perennial Ryegrass very easily. "Tenacity", as it is called, has become a very effective tool for us and many others. What started in the agricultural industry to remove weeds from corn fields has proven a useful tool in the turf industry (often that's how it happens!). We have successfully used it on several holes with great results and will continue to treat two to three holes at a time until we have made it through the entire course. If you happen to be on 6, 7 or 8 fairways in the near future, take notice on the turf quality of these holes. They are all pretty amazing...clean, dark, and pure Ryegrass!! The entire process takes two to three months to remove the unwanted Bentgrass and re-establish Ryegrass but the results speak for themselves. It's very rewarding to acquire new tools that turn out to be as effective as they claim to be and Tenacity has proven to be just that.

Testimonial by Joe Goldberg, Mayacama National Residence Member

We recently returned from our trip to Castello di Casole in Tuscany. The property was as amazing as we anticipated and, in fact, exceeded our expectations. I am sure at some point in our lives we would have planned a trip to Tuscany but the Timbers Reciprocity benefit really motivated us to plan a trip when we saw the opportunity. The services and the property were as first cla ss as we would expect and have experienced every time we return to Mayacama. We received a 32-page activities guide one month prior to help plan our visit. Our Concierge, Lorenzo, was as helpful as anyone could have ever been in planning a trip. We had a full itinerary and took advantage of as much as we possibly could in a week.
The property recently added a Penthouse in the Hotel as part of the Timbers Reciprocity Program and we elected to stay there. The 3500 square foot Penthouse was amazing with 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. We were fortunate to have been invited to an Owner's reception in one of the farm homes where we met some of the Owners of that property and shared our experiences at Mayacama with them and learned about their visits to the other Timbers Resorts properties. I look forward to next month when we will get the opportunity to enjoy another exchange with my Residence Club Membership to visit the new Timbers property in Colorado, Timbers at Bachelor Gulch!
