A WORD ABOUT HANDICAPS
Ever since the Royal Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh was formed in Scotland back in 1735, the issue of Course Handicaps and their reflection on a players’ ability has arisen as a topic of discussion, particularly around the playing of Club Tournaments.
At Mayacama, we take these discussions very seriously. We take a great deal of pride in the fact that our Championships are conducted fairly and at the highest level. Accordingly, we have taken the time to perform an audit of the Club’s Handicap Records as they relate to the number of rounds Members play vs. the number of rounds posted for Handicap purposes. The audit revealed that approximately 70% of the rounds played were posted.
While we initially thought that the variance between rounds of golf played and scores posted for handicap purposes would be closer, we also realize that often there are rounds that are played which are not in accordance with the Rules of Golf. Such rounds include Scramble, Chapman or Pinehurst, Shamble, practice rounds and playing lessons. In those cases, the Rules of Golf are not observed and therefore those rounds cannot be posted. Still, we would like to see the number of rounds played vs. rounds posted closer to 90%.
A quick look at our Champions Boards at Mayacama will reveal that in those flights which are played using Handicaps (both Match Play and Stroke Play), rarely is the same name repeated. This fact would leave one to believe that the Handicap System works relative to creating a level playing field. Further validation is our Traveling Cups, played over various courses and in different conditions. These matches often come down to the last day and occasionally the last match before one side wins. However, to put any concerns about the effectiveness of the Handicap System at Mayacama to rest, we are taking two initiatives relative to posting and monitoring tournament scores:
- Beginning with the recently completed Member-Member Tournament, the Club shall post ALL scores for tournaments conducted in accordance with the Rules of Golf as set forth by the United States Golf Association and the Royal and Ancient Rules Limited. This will insure that scores for all tournaments at Mayacama Golf Club are posted accurately and in a timely manner.
- The Club will monitor all scores posted in tournaments and compare those scores to the player’s Handicap Index. In the event that a player returns exceptional tournament scores compared to their Handicap Index, that player will be subject to a Handicap reduction in accordance with the procedures outlined in the USGA Handicap Manual.
- The Club has already begun posting the weekly Wednesday Skins Game Scores. This new policy has been welcomed by the Skins players for several reasons, least of which is the opportunity to bypass the handicap computer and head straight to the bar.
Regarding non-tournament scores, we encourage everyone to post a score for every round played, as long as that round is played in accordance with the Rules of Golf. We will continue to monitor the Rounds Played vs. Rounds Posted for the remainder of the year, and should the need arise, implement a program where a penalty score may be posted when a player continually plays a round without posting. A penalty score is a score that is equal to the lowest Handicap Differential in the player’s current scoring record.
There are two basic premises that underlie the USGA Handicap System, namely that each player will try to make the best score at every hole in every round, regardless of where the round is played, and that the player will post every acceptable round for peer review. Acceptable scores are those scores played in accordance with the Rules of Golf. The player and your Tournament Committee have joint responsibility for adhering to these premises. The Handicap System is not perfect, but it’s the only one we have, and we shall do our part to uphold its integrity, along with the integrity of our Club.
Please feel free to contact a member of the Professional Staff if you have any questions or comments about the USGA Handicap System, or refer to the Handicap Manual by visiting the USGA Website.
And remember to enjoy the game!
THE MEMBER-MEMBER
60 players enjoyed the 2015 Mayacama Member-Member. This is the second year that the Member-Member adopted the five 9-hole Match Play format...made so popular in our Men's Member-Guest. And this is the first year that the Shoot-Out among the five Flight Winners determined the Overall Champions. Congratulations to all who competed, and of course to the teams that qualified to participate in the Shoot-Out. All of the Member-Member participants came out to cheer on their respective Flight Champion in the Shoot-Out, partly because they wanted to support their flight, but also because they had a vested interest in the outcome should their Flight Winner take the Overall Champions prize. Steve Barker and Shane Brisbin ended up taking the Overall Champion honors over Finalists Don Grant and Paul Puccioni in an exciting four-hole shoot-out. This is a great event and you should begin lining up your partner to play in the 2016 Member, slated for June 24 & 25, 2016!

OUR MEMBERS IN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS!
Brady Exber in the British Senior Open
Mayacama Club Champion competed in the British Senior Open Champions at historic Sunningdale Golf Club near London. Exber qualified in the Senior Open as a result of his winning of last year’s British Senior Amateur Championship. After the Senior Open, Exber heads to Northern Ireland do defend his Senior Amateur Championship at the famed Royal County Down.
Scott Mitchell Qualifies for the 2015 US Junior Amateur Championship
Mayacama Member Scott Mitchell was one of 3,184 Junior Golfers to attempt to qualify for the 2015 Junior Amateur Championship. Scott’s outstanding play at the qualifying tournament enabled him to advance to the final field of 156 players competing for this prestigious National Championship at Colleton River Plantation in South Carolina. Getting into the field is a great accomplishment in and of itself, but once in, Scott then played his way through the 36-hole Stroke Play round to qualify for the 64 player Match Play portion of the Championship. After surviving a series of weather delays and suspension of play on account of darkness, Scott fought through the first round match only to come up short to opponent Sahith Theegala of Chino Hills, California by a score of 3&2. Congratulations to Scott on his outstanding play in the US Junior Amateur.
Mitchell Second Alternate in US Amateur Qualifying
Scott Mitchell was just a lip-out from qualifying for two National Championships in the same year. After qualifying for the US Junior Amateur earlier in the summer, Scott attempted to qualify for the US Amateur at Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club. After a first round of two under par 70, Scott recorded a 68 to for a total of 138 – six under par! From the field of 90 players, three would advance to the US Amateur at Olympia Fields in Chicago, and two players would be alternates. It looked as though 138 might make it but that score fell one back, putting Scott as one of the two alternates in the event that a spot opens in the field.
Other notable showings was Mayacama Junior Connor Chesky, who shot a score of three under par 141 (70 – 71) at Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club. At the US Amateur qualifier in Turlock California, Mayacama Member Ryan Johnson overcame a late-round triple bogey for a first-round score of 74, but followed that up with a strong second round of five under par 67, falling just short of qualifying in what would be his first USGA Championship.
All in all, a great showing this summer for Mayacama Members competing in National (and International) Championships!
A SAD LOSS TO US ALL
It is with deep regret to inform everyone of the sudden death of our Member, Evan Morris. He was a good friend of many Mayacama Members. He was a very nice person and a Golfer in the true sense of the word. On behalf of everyone at Mayacama, our heartfelt thoughts and prayers include the family and friends of Evan. We send our sincere condolences to the family for their loss. |
