Who says you can’t get a good Cab under $60? Our second February wine offer is all about great tasting Cabs at everyday pricing...

2012 Bobcat, Dry Creek Valley
With a climate similar to Bordeaux, it’s no wonder that Dry Creek is ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. This red grape is nearly as widely planted as Zinfandel in Dry Creek Valley. Cabernet Sauvignon thrives in the bench lands, which are composed primarily of igneous gravelly loam that drains well and stresses the vines late in the growing season to produce a concentrated character. Bobcat’s Cabernet Sauvignon is a full-bodied red with aromas and flavors of dark fruits and savory tones. The wine pairs with rich flavors including red meat, earthy mushrooms, and medium to hard cheeses. Bob’s wine is a regular feature at Mayacama and he does not release the wines for review.

2012 Ferrari-Carano Reserve, Lookout Mountain Estate
The hand-harvested grapes enter the gravity flow winery and are hand-sorted, then whole berries are gravity fed into tanks for fermenting before pressing. Individual lots are moved to barrels for malolactic fermentation, then blended and barrel aged for 20 months and aged an additional six months in bottle before release, allowing for the perfect balance of fruit, tannin and oak. This 2012 Cabernet is delicious with aromas and flavors of sweet, ripe black cherry, blackberry, dark spices and toasty, earthy nuances. With a viscous and full-bodied mid-palate, and concentrated, mouth-coating tannins, this wine has excellent depth and a finish that lingers with layers of mocha, spice and sweet oak. 91 Points from Robert Parker

2012 Freemark Abbey, Napa Valley
“A stunning Cabernet Sauvignon and a classic example of Napa viticulture, this blend of 75.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec, was aged just over two years in oak. Loads of sweet blackcurrant fruit, cocoa, a touch of toast, earth, and baking spice are all present in this wine that has terrific fruit on the attack and mid-palate, a full-bodied mouthfeel, no hard edges and a luscious, opulent, gorgeously pure style.” Robert Parker 93 Points

2012 Hauck Cellars, Bugay Vineyards, Mayacama Mountains
Greg Hauck calls his 2012 Bugay Cab his best ever.  Greg says “John Bugay is a meticulous farmer and produces some of the most sought after grapes in Sonoma County (and most expensive). Since we shared a common wine maker, Randall Watkins, we were able to procure a small amount of the fruit for Hauck Cellars”. The 2012 is richly concentrated with smooth tannins, ripe cherry, and dried sage. This wine is just being released so there are no ratings yet.

2012 Joseph Phelps, Napa Valley
The 2012 vintage marks the 40th Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon release from Joseph Phelps Vineyards. This latest bottling highlights beautiful aromatics of dark fruit, cigar box, dried herbs, graphite notes and pain grillé. Expressive Bing cherry, licorice, blueberry and blackberry layer this silky smooth wine of great depth and personality. The wine is richly nuanced with supple tannins and a lingering velvety finish. 91 Points from Antonio Galloni

2012 Stonestreet Estate
The 2012 Stonestreet Estate Cabernet Sauvignon conveys vivid aromas and flavors of black cherry, satsuma plum and blood orange with bay leaf, fresh tobacco and cocoa nib adding further dimension. The palate offers a generous, beautifully extracted texture, all of which is kept in balance by the freshness of the fruit that one finds on the mountain, and an indelible stony signature — wrapped in ripe, chalky tannins that satisfy immediately and yet will easily reward a decade of cellar time. Oh, did I mention Parker gave this 94 points?
