GOLF COURSE Re-grassing

By Dale Engman

Re-Grassing Phase II
Hole 11-18 Closed : Reopening is January 1 (Tentatively)

Our re-grassing efforts on the back nine greens and practice green have gone exceedingly well. Rain impeded progress initially but we made up time and had grass down on all greens on holes 11-18 and the practice green by Friday November 11th. While the green’s sod has been down for several weeks now we are continuing to work on the surrounds and tees with sod deliveries continuing for these areas. We are now mowing the new greens regularly, they are looking fabulous and we continue to maintain a conservative approach to growing them in. That being said, we expect to open those holes for play sometime around the first of the year. I say ‘sometime’ because it is a bit of a moving target. December can be a cold month and we know growth will slow during prolonged cold stretches. If for any reason we feel the greens are not ready the first week of January we will push back the opening and evaluate when will be best to resume play on those holes. Please be patient with us as the health and long term success of the new greens is paramount to our efforts. As the end of the year nears please keep an eye open for updates as we will regularly update progress.

2016 the Year in Review

By Ted Antonopoulos

We cannot speak about 2016 without bringing up the chain of events that resulted in the regrassing of our putting greens. After learning about the extent of the damage to our greens, Club Ownership was decisive in their commitment to do right by our Members and began regrassing all of our greens with a new strand of Bent Grass – Tyee 007.  The end result will be eighteen brand new “poa-free” putting greens on the golf course, and three new practice greens.

The improvements do not stop there. Also regrassed are the approaches and  “surrounds” around the greens. This will likely bring back some of the “release” where golf balls no longer come to rest on greenside slopes, but instead will “feed” back on to the putting surfaces.  Along with the surrounds, we are in the process of replacing the sod on many of the teeing grounds. The new sodded tee boxes will round out our regrassing project entirely. And finally, the project that started before all of this transpired … the bunkers. All of the bunkers on the course have been replaced with new sand, new drainage, new irrigation, resulting in more uniformed playing conditions and firmness. In summary, brand new bunkers, brand new greens, brand new tees,... all with no assessment to the membership!

Dale Engman and his crew are to be commended for transforming what began as a stressful time into better playing conditions for all of our Members. And of course we are grateful to all of our Members for their support and understanding during this year of rebuilding! And lastly, a big thank you goes out to Managing Partner Jonathan Wilhelm whom I heard give this as the main reason to take on this massive re-build … “Our Members deserve it!”

zach makilan represents the northern California pga in the aa cup matches

Mayacama Assistant Golf Professional Zach Makilan was among 12 Northern California PGA Professionals chosen to represent their Association and take on their counterparts at the Southern California PGA in the annual AA (Assistant/Apprentice Association) Cup Matches.  Zach and his 11 NCPGA teammates were hosted at Indian Wells Resort, venue for the 2016 Matches. Using the “Ryder Cup” style formats and scoring for these forms of match play, the teams played Four-Ball (better ball of two), Foursome (alternate shot) and Single Matches. While the home team was victorious, the players from the North put up a good fight. Congratulations Zach on being chosen to represent the NCPGA, and in doing so representing Mayacama Golf Club in these prestigious matches!

Golf Car Usage: our customs & common sense

The Pilot Program – Mayacama Golf Club remains committed to upholding the tradition of walking with a caddie for a round of golf for all players who are physically able to do so. However, allowances have been made to accommodate late afternoon players who would like to come out after 3:30 pm (Summer) and 1:30 pm (Winter) for a late afternoon round with a golf car. During the winter months when weather permits, this option remains available for Members.  With the recent rainfall however, golf car usage has been extremely limited, in part for the safety of the players but also for protection of the turf.  We ask that if you intend to use a golf car during these hours, please call ahead to find out if conditions will permit its use.

Protection of the New Turf – Please be reminded that we have golf car paths around the tees and greens and their use should be observed at all times. This practice has never been more appropriate than now, with so much new turf being established around our greens. We have seen several Members with their golf cars parked just steps away from our greens on new turf … this is not acceptable and please show respect and courtesy and use the golf car paths wherever they are present. We thank you for your courtesy in this regard.

caddie cut-off time

Please be reminded that during the Winter Hours, Caddies are required until 12:00 pm. Should you wish to play later than 12:00 pm and utilize a Caddie, please call the Golf Shop to let us know and we will hold a Caddie for you.

Champagne is a sparkling wine produced from grapes grown in the Champagne region of France following rules that demand, among other things, secondary fermentation of the wine in the bottle to create carbonation (Methode Champenoise).  Specific vineyard practices, sourcing of grapes exclusively from specific parcels in the Champagne appellation and specific pressing regimes are unique to the region. Some use the term Champagne as a generic term for sparkling wine, but in most countries, it is illegal to officially label any product Champagne unless it both comes from the Champagne region and is produced under the rules of the appellation.  Vineyards in the Champagne region of France produce black Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier and also white Chardonnay grapes.  Champagne appellation law only allows grapes grown according to appellation rules in specifically designated plots within the appellation to be used in the production of Champagne.

Other regions throughout the world produce sparkling wine, many made using Methode Championise.  There are other methods of producing sparkling wine.  The two most common are the Charmat (most commonly used in the production of Prosecco) and the soda method, the addition of CO2 (used by cheap sparkling producers).

It is commonly believed that Champagne was discovered by accident when wine that had not gone through malolatic  fermentation was bottled and began a secondary fermentation in the bottle.  Cost-conscious wine merchants would buy wine in barrel, then bottle.  Rather than lose their investment, they added sugar and sold the sparkling wine which eventually caught on especially after Madame Bouvry introduced Champagne to the French Court in the middle 1800s.

Dom Perignon, often referred to as the “Father of Champagne” was a blind monk, originally charged by his superiors at the Abbey of Hautvillers to get rid of the bubbles since the pressure in the bottles caused many of them to burst in the cellar.  As sparkling wine production increased in the early 18th century, cellar workers had to wear a heavy iron mask to prevent injury from spontaneously bursting bottles. The disturbance caused by one bottle exploding could cause a chain reaction, with it being routine for cellars to lose 20–90% of their bottles this way. The mysterious circumstance surrounding the then unknown process of fermentation and carbonic gas caused some critics to call the sparkling creations "The Devil's Wine".  Rather than eliminate the bubbles, his work with bottles and the Champagne cork were among his great contributions to Champagne.

To help celebrate the holidays and honor Dom Perignon, we are pouring the classic Champagne that bears his name.  A special system for refreshing the bottle after each glass is poured will insure you enjoy a great glass of bubbles every time.
