DuMOL

Robert Parker says “I would have to rank DuMOL as one of my favorite half dozen producers of California Chardonnay as well as one of the top twenty in terms of Pinot Noir. Moreover, their Syrah program is also impressive".

Since its beginning in 1996, DuMOL has had a stellar lineup of wines which today includes Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Viognier. Partners Kerry Murphy, Andy Smith, and Tom Pillsbury tend to lead a low profile with very minimal public exposure and let their wines speak for themselves. They believe in blending but also produce outstanding single-vineyard wines. The single-vineyard wines are not named after the principals or the vineyards, but instead they use the names of their family members. Most of the grapes are sourced from the Green Valley appellation where DuMOL also has an estate vineyard, with other grape sources in the Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, and Carneros. Contracts are long-term and grapes are paid for by the acre, insuring that yields can be restricted.

The winemaker and viticulturist since 2000 is talented Andy Smith who became a partner in the winery in 2005. Prior to coming to DuMOL, he studied under Neil McCallum (Dry River, Martinborough), Ted Lemon (Littorai), and Paul Hobbs.

A Special Offer:
The 2013 Vintage is just over a month away. Mayacama has taken a strong position on the great 2012 Vintage and is making these single vineyard wines available while supplies last. Here is a great opportunity to grab some wines from a great vintage. Robert Parker says “according to Andy Smith, 2012 was one of DuMOL’s greatest vintages, and after tasting the wines, I agree”.

The Wines

chloe Chardonnayimage

There are 1,020 cases of the 2012 Chardonnay "chloe" (14.2% natural alcohol) which is sourced from the Ritchie Vineyard and represents the oldest vines, having been planted in 1972. It sees about 45% new French oak but you would never know that based on the sensational richness, texture and flavor profiles where the oak plays a minor role. Copious notes of white peach, apricot marmalade, honeysuckle, brioche and subtle hazelnuts jump from the glass of this beauty. Good acidity buttresses the wine’s broad, powerful mouthfeel, providing freshness as well as delineation. It should drink well for a decade or more.

The 2012 Chardonnay "isobel" (980 cases) comes from 31-year-old vines planted in the Charles Heintz Vineyard, and spent 13 months in 39% new oak. It offers classic notes of tangerine oil, apple blossoms, caramelized citrus and a wet stone minerality. Full-bodied with terrific fruit purity and a subtle hint of oak, it should drink well for 7-8 years. The clonal material is California clone 4.

The brilliant 2012 Chardonnay "estate" (740 cases) also spent 13 months in barrel (40% new) and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. In 2012, the Estate Vineyard was 7 years of age, and is planted with the Old Wente selection known as the Hyde clone as well as some of the Mt. Eden selection from that iconic winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Elegant as well as powerful, this beautiful Chardonnay exhibits notes of lemon custard, spring flowers, citrus blossoms, orange marmalade, melons and white peaches. The acidity is crisp and well-integrated, and the overall impression is one of beautiful, full-bodied, aromatic and persistent richness. Enjoy it over the next 7-8 years.

aiden Pinot Noirimage

The 2012 Pinot Noir "aidan" (445 cases) emerges from Dijon clones 115 and 777 planted in the cool Wild Rose Vineyard in the Russian River. This beauty reveals notes of strawberry jam, plums, blackcurrants, cherries, resiny pine forest, unsmoked cigar tobacco and a hint of cloves. Fresh, full-bodied and complex, it should drink well for a decade.

conner Pinot Noir

The 2012 Pinot Noir "connor" is a tiny offering of 280 cases coming primarily from the Dijon clones and the Pommard selection. Its dark ruby color is followed by aromas of strawberries, herbs, and damp, earthy nuances. While ripe, medium-bodied and well-made, it does not possess the persistence and flavor depth of its less-expensive Russian River sibling. Drink now-2026. After some time in the bottle, Kerry says that this wine is drinking beautifully.

estate Pinot Noirimage

As usual, the 2012 Pinot Noir DuMOL "estate" reveals more structure and cool climate character than its siblings. Notes of forest floor, black currants, black cherries, sassafras and spice box emerge from this heady, moderately tannic 2012 that admirably reflects the vintage’s exuberant style. Drink it over the next decade.

ryan Pinot Noirimage

Made from the Martini selection of Pinot Noir, there are 1,002 cases of the 2012 Pinot Noir "ryan", which comes entirely from the Widdoes Vineyard. Burgundian-like notes of raspberries, blueberries, sassafras, cola, tobacco leaf and barbecued meats are followed by a rich, full-bodied, multidimensional, big, earthy, savory Pinot Noir. Enjoy it over the next decade.
