Robert Parker says “I would have to rank DuMOL as one of my favorite half dozen producers of California Chardonnay as well as one of the top twenty in terms of Pinot Noir. Moreover, their Syrah program is also impressive".
Since its beginning in 1996, DuMOL has had a stellar lineup of wines which today includes Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Viognier. Partners Kerry Murphy, Andy Smith, and Tom Pillsbury tend to lead a low profile with very minimal public exposure and let their wines speak for themselves. They believe in blending but also produce outstanding single-vineyard wines. The single-vineyard wines are not named after the principals or the vineyards, but instead they use the names of their family members. Most of the grapes are sourced from the Green Valley appellation where DuMOL also has an estate vineyard, with other grape sources in the Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, and Carneros. Contracts are long-term and grapes are paid for by the acre, insuring that yields can be restricted.
Andy Smith has been the winemaker and viticulturist since 2000 and became a partner in 2005. Prior to coming to DuMOL, he studied under Neil McCallum (Dry River, Martinborough), Ted Lemon (Littorai), and Paul Hobbs.
A Special Offer:
The 2014 Vintage single vineyard wines are less than a month away. Mayacama has taken a strong position on some of the remaining 2012 and 2013 vintages while supplies last. Robert Parker says “according to Andy Smith, 2012 was one of DuMOL’s greatest vintages, and after tasting the wines, I agree”. The 2013s were also strongly received.
The Wines
2012 Dumol Chardonnay isobel
A Chardonnay Dry White Table Wine
USA, Sonoma, North Coast, California, USA

The 2012 Chardonnay isobel (980 cases) comes from 31-year-old vines planted in the Charles Heintz Vineyard, and spent 13 months in 39% new oak. It offers classic notes of tangerine oil, apple blossoms, caramelized citrus and a wet stone minerality. Full-bodied with terrific fruit purity and a subtle hint of oak, it should drink well for 7-8 years. The clonal material is California clone 4.
2012 Dumol Chardonnay estate
A Chardonnay Dry White Table Wine
USA, Sonoma, North Coast, California, USA

The brilliant 2012 Chardonnay estate (740 cases) also spent 13 months in barrel (40% new) and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. In 2012, the Estate Vineyard was 7 years of age, and is planted with the Old Wente selection known as the Hyde clone as well as some of the Mt. Eden selection from that iconic winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Elegant as well as powerful, this beautiful Chardonnay exhibits notes of lemon custard, spring flowers, citrus blossoms, orange marmalade, melons and white peaches. The acidity is crisp and well-integrated, and the overall impression is one of beautiful, full-bodied, aromatic and persistent richness. Enjoy it over the next 7-8 years.
2012 Dumol Syrah jack robert's run
A Syrah Dry Red Table Wine
USA, Sonoma, North Coast, California, USA

The 2012 Syrah jack roberts run (330 cases aged in one-third new French hogsheads for 18 months) boasts an opaque purple color as well as notes of charcuterie, smoked meats, roasted herbs, espresso, blackberries, graphite and Asian soy. This meaty, full-throttle Syrah hits the palate with a thunderous layer of fruit in a full-bodied manner. Enjoy this beauty over the next decade or more.
2013 Dumol Chardonnay chloe
A Chardonnay Dry White Table Wine
USA, Napa, North Coast, California, USA

The 2013 Chardonnay chloe, which comes from two great vineyard sources, the Ritchie and Lorenzo, was treated similarly in terms of its aging 12 months on its lees, then four months in tank. Good acidity buttresses a relatively full-throttle, big, rich, honeyed wine, with plenty of apple blossom, orange marmalade, and pineapple notes. There is some underlying minerality as well. This should also drink well for at least a decade.
2013 Dumol Pinot Noir estate
A Pinot Noir Dry Red Table Wine
USA, Sonoma, North Coast, California, USA

The 2013 Pinot Noir estate is 100% DuMOL estate fruit from high density plantings, 80% from the Calera selection and 20% from the Swan. The most backward and tannic of the 2013 Pinot Noirs, it has a dark ruby/plum color and notes of forest floor, black currant, cherries, and underbrush. It is spicy, earthy, and best drunk after another two years of bottle age. It does seem capable of lasting 10-15 years.
2013 Dumol Pinot Noir finn
A Pinot Noir Dry Red Table Wine
USA, Sonoma, North Coast, California, USA

The 2013 Pinot Noir finn (two-thirds from the DuMOL estate and a third from the Occidental Road Vineyard) includes fruit from numerous clones, most notably the Calera selection. This wine shows some notes of sassafras, black and red currants, cherries, loamy soil notes and underbrush. It is a dark ruby/plum-colored, medium to full-bodied, and again, relatively concentrated like the ryan. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.
2013 Dumol Syrah eddie's patch
A Syrah Dry Red Table Wine
USA, Sonoma, North Coast, California, USA

The 2013 Syrah eddie’s patch comes from volcanic red soils and shows tightly knit blueberry and blackberry fruit with some camphor, charcoal and barbecue notes. It is highly extracted, intense, full-bodied and rich. It reminds me of a California version of a serious Crozes-Hermitage. Give it several years of cellaring and drink it over the following 15 or so years. About 30% whole clusters were used during fermentation.
