To Our Mayacama Members,

Truckloads of Tyee 007 Bentgrass Sod are rolling up Mayacama Club Drive as you read this update, in route to a new home on the putting surfaces of Holes 1 – 10. We expect that installation of the new sod will be completed over this weekend, and our Maintenance Staff will begin touchup work around the collars and approaches next week. Then we wait … wait for the new “poa-free” sod to establish its roots into the new putting green sub-surfaces, all of which have been replaced with new “root-zone”  and re-contoured back to their original design. The end result will be ten new putting surfaces with eight more to follow in early October.

We want to thank you, our Members for your understanding and tremendous support during this process. It has been quite an undertaking for all of us, and after considering all of the facts and options available to us, we chose the course of action that would not only remedy the situation in the fastest way possible, but also one that would ultimately improve the condition of our greens for years to come. Our Members deserve it!

COURSE REOPENING SCHEDULE
Saturday – May 14:      “Modified” 18-Holes
Beginning tomorrow, the Golf Course will open for play with a “modified” version of our original 18 holes. As the new sod takes hold, Holes 1-10 will be played on “temporary greens” over a modified course routing (see sample scorecard image). This new course will no doubt be fun and entertaining, enabling you to hit shots that you normally would not see at Mayacama. Special 6” holes will be installed on the ten temporary greens and our caddies have mapped out the new yardages and hopefully the breaks on the new putting surfaces.

Here’s your chance to shoot your own personal course record as the shorter but still challenging course is in play for the next few weeks. Although your scores will not be available for posting, we have established new Slope Ratings and Handicap Stroke Allocations so that the Skins Game and other forms of play may still continue on the new course. We also have plans over Memorial Day Weekend for a Special “Sip N’ Swing” and a Match Play Tournament over the Holiday Weekend. While it won’t be the normal Mayacama Experience, we are putting forth the effort to provide you with a fun and challenging course to play until the “Big Course” reopens.

Wednesday – June 8:   Re-Opening of All 18 Holes
Depending on grow in condition we expect to be playing on the new greens as soon as Wednesday, June 8. In addition, all of the bunker renovations will be complete and the new bunkers will be in play at the same time. Green Speeds may vary slightly as the new greens come into play but they will be a welcome sight for all of us and we hope to see you at the Club as we return to normal operations with the opening of the new greens.

As one can imagine, an undertaking such as this required several steps in order to ensure that we return with the quality putting surfaces for which we are known. Dale Engman and his Staff have worked around the clock and with the support of some of the finest turfgrass resources in the game today. We are confident that the course of action we have chosen is the best for your playing conditions and enjoyment of our Club. We thank you for your support during what has been a challenging yet valuable experience as we work to bring you back to the conditions that you not only are accustomed to but deserve as Members of Mayacama Golf Club.

CADDIES
During the partial closure of the Golf Course, several Members have inquired about establishing a “fund” to compensate Mayacama Caddies who are experiencing a loss of income due to a slowdown in play. While the reduction of play has resulted in a reduction of hours for all of the Service Personnel at the Club, Caddies are especially affected when they do not get work. Accordingly and as requested, we have establish a voluntary fund into which Members may opt to contribute for distribution to those caddies who have most been affected by a loss of income. The fund is open-ended and strictly voluntary. If you would like to contribute, please do so by return email and designate the amount that you wish to contribute. This amount will be placed on your Member Account and distributed accordingly to the Caddies.

Sincerely,

Mayacama Golf Club
