To Our Mayacama Members,

We are thrilled to announce that the re-opening of the back nine is scheduled for Wednesday January 18th!

The past four months have been a very busy time for us. As you know we have successfully re-grassed the back nine greens and have been steadily working on re-building the back nine tees. The process of rebuilding the tees has gone fairly well but embarking on a project such as this at this time of year is no walk in the park. The rains came early and often and when the rain clouds parted we have had to battle cold mornings and lingering frosts. Not to be deterred, we pushed on and now have new teeing grounds on most of the holes on the back nine; exciting news indeed.

The plan is to rebuild all teeing grounds on the course. With the difficulties facing us this time of year we have decided to wait to proceed any further until the weather is more conducive to doing so.

Since establishing the back nine greens in early November we have been conservative in our approach to getting them ready. This time of year soil temperatures drop rapidly and do not rebound until late February to early March. Soil temperatures drive growth and as you can imagine, establishment of the new greens were sure to be affected. Now, after two months, we have greens that look fabulous and are ready for play. They are not quite on par with the front nine greens as far as playability goes but they are certainly healthy and able to withstand the traffic that will come once play resumes.

Since the turf on the tees is so new we will be using mats on the par three tees for a short time. The par fours will be fine as most will be using a tee and not be gouging on their shots…most, I say. Also, the back nine greens are still very new. Playability will be noticeably different than the front but please be patient and know consistent, quality playing surfaces are just around the corner. And as a reminder, please respect the new turf by repairing ball marks on greens and keeping golf cars on the paths around greens and tees and on all par three holes.
