new local rule for accidental movement on putting green
The USGA and The R&A announced the introduction of a new Local Rule that eliminates the penalty when a ball is accidentally moved on the putting green. Beginning on January 1, we will observe this new Local Rule at Mayacama Golf Club for daily play and for all of our tournaments and championships.
The movement of a ball on a putting green has been one of the many topics discussed as part of The R&A’s and USGA’s ongoing Rules Modernization initiative to consider comprehensive changes to the Rules of Golf. For these particular situations, it was noted that the shape, slope, and condition of many putting greens today increase the chances that a ball at rest on a putting green will move, and it can be difficult to determine whether a player caused the ball to move or whether the ball was moved by wind or other natural causes. Furthermore, when a ball moves while the player is doing nothing more than taking normal actions to prepare for a stroke, it may seem unfair for the player to be penalized.
The following is the full text of the Local Rule that we will adopt at Mayacama Golf Club effective January 1, 2017. This same Local Rule will also be adopted in all USGA Championships, the PGA Tour, European Tour, LPGA, PGA of America, and the Masters Tournament.
Accidental Movement of a Ball on a Putting Green
Rules 18-2, 18-3 and 20-1 are modified as follows:
When a player’s ball lies on the putting green, there is no penalty if the ball or ball-marker is accidentally moved by the player, his partner, his opponent, or any of their caddies or equipment.
The moved ball or ball-marker must be replaced as provided in Rules 18-2, 18-3 and 20-1.
This Local Rule applies only when the player’s ball or ball-marker lies on the putting green and any movement is accidental.
Note: If it is determined that a player’s ball on the putting green was moved as a result of wind, water or some other natural cause such as the effects of gravity, the ball must be played as it lies from its new location. A ball-marker moved in such circumstances is replaced.”

Repairing Ball Marks on the Putting Greens
With 18 new putting greens at Mayacama, it’s never been more important to repair your ball marks (or pitch marks) on the putting green. A freshly-repaired ball mark will recover in a matter of minutes, while a mark that goes unrepaired can take up to three weeks to heal. And repairing a ball mark incorrectly can often do more damage. Here’s a link to a USGA Video to show how to properly repair a pitch mark in a green. Please take a moment to view the video HERE, and please … ignore the guy with the cargo shorts and un-tucked shirt – we do not endorse that look!
Remember that to properly repair a pitch mark, insert the tool (or tee) at the outer edge of the indentation and pull the damaged turf toward the center of the mark … never pull up! And while you’re at it, repair one other pitch mark that may have been left behind!
And Please Remember
RANGE HOURS … The Driving Range closes for maintenance at 4:30 pm every Monday & Thursday. Your cooperation is appreciated.
CADDIE CUT-OFF TIME … Caddies are required until 12:00 pm during Winter Hours. Should you wish to play later than 12:00 and utilize a Caddie, please call the Golf Shop to let us know and we will hold a Caddie for you.
PROTECTION OF THE NEW TURF … You MUST use the golf car paths provided around the tees and greens at all times.
