Important News & Updates

Sonoma County’s unemployment rate has dropped to 3.5 percent, reaching a 15 year low! This may be cause for celebration to some, however, it has made hiring good employees at Mayacama a real challenge. Most of the employment in our county is related to the wine and hospitality industries and we are truly experiencing the most challenging hiring environment in our history. Although we are providing competitive wages, benefits and even referral/hiring bonuses; we are still finding it difficult to attract well-trained staffers in all departments and the same is true for employees who have little to no experience.

Spa providers are no exception and with the addition of new hotels and spas opening up throughout wine country, there are clearly opportunities abound. Sadly, we have had to turn away business because we simply don’t have enough spa providers on the payroll. This adversely affects you as members because we aren’t able to provide you with a treatment when you want it. Over the next few weeks and months, we hope to change the business model by adding more staffers who will be onsite from 10am to 3pm on a daily basis. In the interest of ensuring we remain competitive, we are changing the “no tipping” policy in the spa to a “voluntary tipping” policy. We want you to know there is absolutely no pressure to tip your provider, however if you would like, you will now have that opportunity to do so at the end of your treatment by signing your “chit” on your way out. Many members and guests have offered a gratuity in the past and we believe it will help the club maintain more providers on the grounds who will be more readily available to serve you when you request it. This is a change in our policy, however it is normal practice in the spa world and is a large reason many people become providers in the first place. Please be advised our staff has been notified that the policy is purely voluntary on your part as members and please feel no pressure to do so. We hope this new policy will help attract more staff who will be with our team for years to come and provide you with the best possible service….and at a moment’s notice!

Clubhouse & Pool Closed

Please be advised, the Clubhouse and pool will be closed on Tuesday, July 19th for the Annual Employee Picnic.

SUMMER CAMPS

We have an action packed summer planned with camps ranging from candle making and glass fusion, to archery and fencing. Each camp may have a specific target age group who will get the most out of the camp, but there is room for all ages with a few days advanced notice, so we can give the little ones the attention they deserve.

We have also extended each camp by an extra hour, from four to five hours, so you can get in a solid round of golf on our beautiful course, participate in off property wine tasting at our many nearby wineries, enjoy a luxurious day at the Mayacama Spa, or just kick back for a few hours without the kiddos. Meanwhile you can be assured that the kids are having a great time being adventurous, active, learning new crafts, and making lifelong friends. Guests are always welcome to participate in camps and pricing per camp attendee can be adjusted if you bring in a group of 3 or more. We encourage you to let us know if you have any dates or times when you would like to customize a camp, activity, or have any babysitting requests since we are flexible to accommodate your every need!

See the schedule of camps HERE and sign your kids up today! And if you have any questions, please contact Melinda Murray at [email protected] or 707.569.2908

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews

Twelve Gentlemen Golfers journeyed to The Home of Golf to compete in the Fifteenth Playing of the Mayacama Traveling Cup Matches! The players where divided into two six-man teams and competed in Four-Ball and Single Matches for points ... Ryder Cup Style! The Traveling Cup (yes, The Cup actually travels with us) visited the likes of Elie, Crail, Lundin Links, Kingsbarns, Carnoustie, and of course The Old Course. The players took a break from their matches for a Club Match with our friends at Panmure, and in keeping with tradition, the home Club won, raising the familiar cry of "HANDICAPS!" ... can't win! Our hosts at Panmure rolled out the red carpet for us as usual as they hosted us for lunch, golf, and then a formal dinner at their Club, capped off by the customary dram of Kümmel!

Congratulations to Captain Stephen Wright and his players for their four point victory over Captain Ted Antonopoulos and his men in the Traveling Cup Matches. The players celebrated their victory (and their loss) at a dinner in The Old Course Hotel overlooking the links ... a breathtaking setting. Attending the Awards Dinner were distinguished guests from St. Andrews Golf Club including Past Captain Michael Cordner, Secretary Tom Gallagher, Member Gordon Donaldson, and of Course Gerry Boyd ... The Driver To Avoid!

Recap
: Junior golf school

Eighteen aspiring Junior Golfers attended the newly created Mayacama Junior Golf School in June. Inspired by the success of our Junior Golf Boot Camp, the Junior Golfers learned how to hit all the shots needed to play the game. But the School went beyond that, exposing the Juniors to etiquette, basic golf terminology, and the core values that the game represents! A fun time was had by all during the first two days, and capped off on the final day when the 18th hole was retrofitted into a special 3-hole golf course exclusively for the Golf School participants. We're very excited that this new Junior Golf School was such a success, and look forward to seeing many of the same faces at our Junior Golf Boot Camp on July 27th-29th. There is still room available for Boot Camp so please call the Golf Shop to register your Juniors.

Hosting a summer wine party

By Jeff McCarthy

Summer is the perfect time to host a wine-themed party. Seize the opportunity to taste something new or different.

Creating a summer wine tasting offers all kinds of advantages: it is social, fun, creates conversation and gives your guests something to talk about.  With wine as the focus, you can cut back on the food preparation by serving  hor d’oeuvres, finger foods or creating a backyard BBQ allowing  your guests to mingle and interact.  You can even make it a pot-luck with a theme.

When planning your event ask yourself whether you want something causal or formal.  A formal tasting requires more preparation with perhaps a few more wines.  Let your guests be your guide.  If you prefer to keep it simple, have some themed wine stations and let your guests enjoy their favorites. If your group loves wine, then you might want to make it a sit-down event.

The challenge with a sit-down tasting is glassware.  For a formal tasting you will need one glass for each wine.  Glassware is easy to rent and if you limit the number of wines to 6-8 it is easily manageable.  Also note your serving size as the more wines you present, the smaller the portions should be.

It is easy to create a tasting matt so your guests will remember the wines they tasted and they can write notes below each of the wines.  You can also serve the wines in flights….whites then reds.

For simple stand-up tastings one glass per person should work.  Have a separate table for glassware and a few well-placed dump buckets.

Unless you are hosting a high-end tasting, keep it simple. For example: Start with three white grapes (aromatic white, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay) followed by three reds (Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel). This will illustrate the basic differences between varietals.  You could also pick a single varietal showcasing the differences in terroir and styles.

If you would like help planning your event or you need to purchase wines at great prices, please reach out to someone on the Mayacama Wine Team.  We are happy to help you with all aspects of your event and we can even host your event at the club.

Contact our Wine Director, Jeff McCarthy, at 707 569 2906 or [email protected] if you have any questions, or would like to place an order.

Summer SPA SPECIAL

By D'Arcy Connich

Mayacama Spa would like to offer two treatments for the Summer Spa Special;  it was simply too difficult to choose just one!

The Aromatherapy Healing Treatment is a great way to start your summer! This 80 Minute Treatment begins with a relaxing and relieving body massage, followed by the rotation of eight essential oils. Each oil is dispersed using the raindrop effect down the Central Nervous System (the spine) and lightly spread along the bare-back and soles of the feet.  In conclusion of this treatment you will receive a wonderful lymphatic facial massage to help drain any congestion. These powerful essential oils target four systemic constants within the body assisting with stress relief, inflammatory response, the immune system, and all around homeostasis. The essential oils that are selected for the Aromatherapy Healing Treatment are of the highest quality and 100% pure.

Since these oils are pure, they can have a strong impact on the body. These essential oils can regulate digestion, circulation, internal functions; assist in detoxifying and flushing the body to help create a better balance. It is very important to relax and rest for the following 24-48 hours, eat healthy, and stay well-hydrated!! The essential oils need to be diluted to assist the toxin removal.  This is the perfect way to realign the mind and body to be happier, healthier, and all around balanced!

**CAUTIONS - if you have not used pure essential oils, or have been drinking excessively prior to the treatment- you can become sick from the flushing of toxins. -safe but not fun!   Essential oils are safe to use on anyone who is not PREGNANT, taking hormone medication, thyroid problems, or has an allergy to specific oils in the rotation.

*
For 24 hours DO NOT drink alcohol or use any drugs, excessively exercise, or become dehydrated. You can intensify the flushing and become nauseous.

Health Tip

Coconut oil is one of the few foods that can be classified as a “superfood.”  Its unique combination of fatty acids can have profound positive effects on health.  This includes fat loss, better brain function and it can kill harmful pathogens, potentially helping to prevent infections.  Coconut Oil may also be used for Oil Pulling, also known as "kavala" or "gundusha,” an ancient Ayurvedic dental technique that involves swishing a tablespoon of oil in your mouth on an empty stomach for around 20 minutes. This action is known to draw out toxins in your body, primarily to improve oral health but also to improve your overall health.
