Summer is here…..
-Dale Engman
We can say with full certainty, summer has arrived. June has brought us our first heat wave of the year with temperatures on Sunday the 18th reaching 105 degrees! That’s hot folks. That coupled with several days in the high 90’s before and after have kept us on our toes. I will say though, the course handled it well.
During these stretches, we employ many methods to help the course handle the triple digit heat.
First and most often used are moisture meters. Moisture meters are tools we use to determine how much water the soil is holding. As you can imagine soil moisture is very important for proper turfgrass management. Too much moisture creates soft playing conditions and can incite disease. Too little and things can dry out quickly and go south in a hurry. Moisture meters give us data on what is going on beneath the turf and help us walk that line of firm playing conditions and proper plant health.
Another technique used regularly is hand watering. Literally workers with hoses watering spots in fairways and roughs. I’m sure most have seen us out there this time of year. While this may seem excessive, the reason for this detailed approach is that as we water with our irrigation system there are inevitably areas that get less water than others. If we were to water to keep everything green wall-to-wall the golf course would be wet. Hand watering allows us to hold back somewhat on irrigation and keep things as firm as we can while keeping the turf happy.
One very important component of our summer agronomic programs are wetting agents. Wetting agents are a class of products commonly used in the turf industry that treats soils to fight the hydrophobic tendencies soils develop over time. The dryer soil becomes the more difficult it is for water to penetrate. Wetting agents help by breaking the surface tension of water, allowing it into the soil, thus helping to maintain proper soil moisture levels.
Stay cool, drink water and enjoy these long days of summer….

Caddie-Member Recap
In the 11th Annual Caddie-Member Championship, 30 teams competed in this event that allows the members to team up with their favorite caddie. Thank you to all who contributed to the raffle as all of the prizes were very much appreciated by all caddies. With the format of this event being a shamble, fun was had by all and at the end of the day we saw two new Vintner Member’s teams at the top of the leader board. The defending champion trio from 2015 (championship was not held in 2016) of Malin Giddings, Kim Edwards, and Nick Caulfield were paired with Greg Araujo from Accendo Cellars and they played to a three-stroke victory over also new Vintner Member Tom Birdsall who was paired with Dwight Haldan, Patrick Haldan, and Mike Wier.

Junior golf camp - drive, chip & putt
The addition of a third junior golf camp to the calendar was successful with 20 boys and girls participating in what was themed after the national Drive, Chip & Putt Championship which is held at Augusta National Golf Club on the Sunday before The Masters. The kids were taught that golf is about having fun, but they also learned the core values of the game and terminology as it pertains to golf clubs and the golf course. After two days of practice the third and final day of the camp consisted of conducting the three forms of competition you see on TV - Driving, Chipping, and Putting. The camp participants were broken into three age groups and prizes were awarded for the three forms of competition and also for winning or finishing second in your age group. The format requires both players to truly play as a “team” rather than relying on the skills of the better player. Both players tee off, they then hit each other’s ball for the second shot. After the second shot, the players select the ball with which they wish to complete the hole and play that ball alternating shots until the ball is holed. Both the Champions and the Mayacama Flight (played with Course Handicap) Champions will be recognized with trophies.
