GOLF COURSE UPDATE
We want to thank you for your continued support during our restoration project of our putting greens. We have taken the opportunity to improve not only the putting surfaces, but other areas of the course as well, including the surrounds and approaches, the continued bunker renovation program, and a new cart path behind the driving range and practice putting green. Here is an update on the progress thus far:
HOLES 1 – 10
These greens have been resodded with Tyee 007 Bent Grass and are progressing as planned. The sod has already taken root and we have begun the process of lowering the height of the cut in anticipation of opening the greens on our target date of Monday, June 6. Here is a link for further information and success stories on the type of bentgrass selected for our greens … probably more information than you care to know!
http://bentgrassdoctor.com/home
HOLES 11 – 12
These greens still reflected significant damage and slower recovery than we had originally planned. Accordingly, we have begun an aggressive seeding program to bring these two greens back to acceptable conditions. Seed and topdressing have been applied and we should see sign of germination during the first week of June. After germination, we need to continue with watering and once established we will begin mowing the new seed and gradually lowering the height of the cut. During this process we will have temporary greens on these two holes until such time that the new grass is deemed acceptable for putting. We have set a temporary target date of our Member-Member (June 24 & 25) to open those two greens.
PRACTICE PUTTING GREENS
We plan to re-sod the practice putting green adjacent to the first tee with new bent grass sod in early June. We have seeded the lower putting green as we have done to holes 11 & 12 and will keep you updated on the progress and proposed opening date of those two greens as we monitor their progress. In the meantime, the practice putting green at the upper practice ground (short game area) is in perfect condition and we have added a few more holes to that green to accommodate more members.
BUNKER RENOVATION – HOLE #2
By far the most complex of the bunker renovation projects is the second hole. That project has been completed and the entire surround of that green and bunker complex has been resodded and looks much like it did on the day that we opened. With the completion of the 8th and 9th bunkers, our bunker renovation project will be completed.
PATH BEHIND THE DRIVING RANGE
This area has been paved from the entrance to the back of the range down past the lower putting green. While we enjoyed the natural look of the previous surface, the dust in the summer and mud in the winter were an inconvenience the paving has eliminated. However the surface that we selected for this project still maintains the "natural" look.
Again we thank you for your patience and support as we make these improvements to your golf course. We are committed to bringing you the type of conditions that we have enjoyed over the past 15 years, which is why we have opted for the path we chose in lieu of a “quick fix” solution. This will enable us to provide you with the type of consistent putting surfaces for which we have become known.
CLUB CUSTOMS
Last week Members and Staff where sent a friendly reminder of our Club Customs. While on the Golf Course and Driving Range, we ask that Gentlemen always have their shirts tucked in, hats on forward, and please no Cargo Shorts. For the Ladies, we ask that you refrain from tank tops, however collared sleeveless shirts are permitted. Although uncomfortable for all, Staff will be enforcing this Club Custom. Please remind your guests about the Club Customs and the Club’s intent to uphold it for the enjoyment of all.
And while we’re at it, please don’t forget that nothing is more annoying than loud cell phone conversations while you are trying to practice or play. Speaking of practice, it’s bad form to use range balls anywhere other than the designated practice area (driving range). Ownership is very generous in supplying us several times per year with brand new Titleist Pro V-1 Practice Balls. It’s disheartening to find them occasionally scattered on the Golf Course!
SIP ‘N SWING “BEAT THE PRO”
Six Teams came out to play The New Course and challenge the Mayacama Professional Staff in the impromptu “Beat The Pro” Sip ‘N Swing and kick-off the Memorial Day weekend at the Club. The players all enjoyed their day sipping and swinging to the myriad of “special rules” thrown in to make the game a little more interesting. Six teams of four to six players for the Members and a team of four players of Golf Professionals competed over the nine “new” holes. Those teams who returned scores lower that the 28 strokes posted by the Professional Staff would split the purse. Unfortunately … no one beat the target score, but all enjoyed the beautiful Sonoma County weather, the 6-inch holes used on “The New Course”, and certainly the wine and hors d’oeuvres after the golf, even though cries of “rigged” and “not fair” could be heard echoing throughout the post-golf reception. You’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t!

first friday pour : The debate
Friday June 3
5:30pm- 6:30pm
Philosophy: Wines, like people, are a reflection of their origin and evolution. By selecting three different vineyards with three different expressions of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, the Debate seeks to point out the diversity of terroir that is shown in each of these wines. The Debate defines the notion of terroir as the interaction of a climate, a soil and a plant in a unique location. Vines, like people, develop character from its surroundings and upbringing. Each of these wines, will possess their own personality and reflect the different facets from its place in the world. Robert Parker rates these three wines at 95 points, 96 points and 100 points.

SUMMER CAMPS
We have an action packed summer planned with camps ranging from candle making and glass fusion, to archery and fencing. Each camp may have a specific target age group who will get the most out of the camp, but there is room for all ages with a few days advanced notice, so we can give the little ones the attention they deserve.
We have also extended each camp by an extra hour, from four to five hours, so you can get in a solid round of golf on our beautiful course, participate in off property wine tasting at our many nearby wineries, enjoy a luxurious day at the Mayacama Spa, or just kick back for a few hours without the kiddos. Meanwhile you can be assured that the kids are having a great time being adventurous, active, learning new crafts, and making lifelong friends. Guests are always welcome to participate in camps and pricing per camp attendee can be adjusted if you bring in a group of 3 or more. We encourage you to let us know if you have any dates or times when you would like to customize a camp, activity, or have any babysitting requests since we are flexible to accommodate your every need!

One of a kind-only at Mayacama
Lot #20: dumol monticello vineyard cabernet sauvignon
By Jeff McCarthy
On Friday, April 29th I attended the Sonoma County Barrel Auction, an event similar to Premier Napa, that raises money for local charities. This is a trade only event where wine lots are chosen for auction by a committee of Master Sommeliers and auctioned off to restaurateurs, wine shop owners, vineyard owners and wine distributors from around the country.
The event begins with a two hour barrel tasting of the different lots and is followed by the gala lunch and auction. What made this year’s event special was that Dumol’s winemaker, Andy Smith…also a great Cab producer, handcrafted a special barrel of Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon from the famous Monticello Vineyard, known for producing those great vintages for the Kenwood Artist Series wines from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.
This is literally, Dumol’s inaugural bottling of Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is pure old vine Cabernet, perched at 2000 feet in the highlands of the Mayacamas mountain range high above Sonoma Valley. The grapes are from organically-farmed, gnarly old vines planted in 1964. The soils are deep, powerful, iron-rich and rocky volcanic. They produce wine of power, elegance, pedigree and rarity. Andy has harnessed his 20+ years of Cabernet winemaking experience to raise this singular expression of Sonoma Cabernet Heritage. The wine is still in barrel and will be bottled and released to Mayacama in mid-June.
After some skillful maneuvering, I was able to procure the winning bid of this one-time only Cabernet. Only five cases were produced and will be available strictly for Mayacama members. The wine will be $200 per bottle and I can take orders beginning today. The wine will be available for pick up next month.

Meet the Therapist - Laura Parker
I grew up in Sonoma County and when I left at 18 for school, I didn't think I would return any time soon. But my time in Portland and Washington DC opened my eyes to how wonderful Sonoma County is so I had to come back. After years of working in museums I knew it was time for a change.
I grew up playing soccer, basketball, and softball and was a college athlete so knowing the body system is second nature to me. I went back to school at the Sebastopol Massage Center and am so thankful I did. I love helping people feel better in their bodies and daily life through massage. Beyond the physical benefits of massage I am passionate about the mental and emotional well-being that can come from body work. For this reason, I love acupressure, reflexology, homeopathic spinal alignment, and other seemingly benign work that is actually penetrating deeply into the whole health of clients. In addition to these modalities, I have experience in deep tissue, hot stone, pre-natal, elder massage, and more. I look forward to helping Mayacama members in their quest for health and wellness through massage.
