ALL ABOUT GOLF - By Ted Antonopoulos
MAYACAMA JUNIOR GOLFERS HEAD TO THE NEXT LEVEL
As their Junior Golf careers come to a close, we want to take a moment to congratulate our Mayacama Junior Golfers who are moving on to play at the next level – NCAA Division I Golf!
Mayacama National Member Ben Albin is currently in his Freshman year at Notre Dame, where he is a Member of the Fighting Irish Men’s Golf Team. Joining Ben as a Freshman Member of the Notre Dame Golf Team is Mayacama’s Miguel Delgado of Novato, California.
Daniel Connolly of San Francisco is another Member of our Junior Golf Program, and has signed a letter of intent to play at Southern Methodist University in the Fall of 2016. Another Member of our Junior Golf Program headed for the NCAA is Connor Chesky of St. Helena, California. Connor will be headed South to the University of South Carolina to join the Gamecocks as a Member of their Men’s Golf Team in the Fall of 2016.
Ryan Johnson of Yountville California will be playing his collegiate golf at the University of Santa Clara in 2016. As Founding Members of Mayacama, Ryan literally grew up around the game at Mayacama. And Mayacama Member Scott Mitchell is another Sonoma County resident who grew up around the game at Mayacama. Scott will be competing in the Pac-12 Conference next year as a Member of the Men’s Golf Team at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
We congratulate all of these fine young men and wish them well as they take their games to the next level…NCAA Division I Golf! You can follow their progress on their respective school’s Men’s Golf Team websites, Golfweek Magazine’s collegiate section, and www.golfstat.com.

SPRINGTIME GOLF AT MAYACAMA
We always look forward to Springtime in the Wine Country! Flowering trees start to bloom in February, bud-break occurs on the vines, and the St. Patrick’s Day Four-Ball kicks off the Mayacama Golf Season in true Irish fashion! While our St. Patrick’s Day Four-Ball is already a sold-out event, there’s plenty more to celebrate in Golf this Spring at Mayacama.
CADDIE-MEMBER
Our Caddie-Member celebrates the special bond between our players and their Caddies as they pair together as teammates in this Four-Ball Stroke Play tournament (better-ball of two). The date is Monday, 25th April and registration is now open on the Mayacama Website to sign up and make your Caddie Partner request.
WOMEN’S GOLF CLINICS
During the month of May, the Mayacama Professional Staff will again be donating their time and expertise as they conduct the Annual Women’s Golf Clinics. This series of Clinics takes place every Wednesday in May, one at 9:00 am and the other at 11:00 am, and covers all aspects of the Game of Golf; from rules, etiquette, and instruction on putting, chipping, pitching, bunker play, and full swing. This program has been a great introduction to the game for newcomers, but it also benefits the experienced player as well. And the number one byproduct of our Women’s Clinics has been the opportunity to meet your fellow Members, establish friendships, and play with players of like ability with whom you can play either 9 or 18 holes! Advance registration is required. Members may sign up for any or all of the Women’s Clinics in the Golf Shop or online.
THE VINTNER CUP
Online registration is also now open for The Vintner Cup, another tournament that is unique to our Club. In the style of a typical Pro-Am, this event pairs a team of three Mayacama Members with one of our Vintner Members to form a four-person team. Teams draw their Vintner Member Partner at the celebratory Pairings Dinner held at the Club on the eve on the event, where Members receive one of the best Tee Prizes in Golf…a Magnum of their Vintner Partner’s wine! Teams compete in a two-best-ball Shamble on Saturday and the event is followed by the All Vintner Pour…one of the more celebrated events at Mayacama!
THE MAYACAMA CUP – THE ANNUAL MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP
Memorial Day Weekend is also Mayacama Cup Weekend at the Club. Our Annual Match Play Championship is always played over the Memorial Day Weekend, and Members come from all over the country to test their skills in Golf’s oldest format…Match Play! The game is played by holes…18 one-hole contests rather than one 18-hole contest. The winner of each match advances to the next stage and next opponent, with their sights set on reaching the finals on Monday, May 30. That’s when the Men’s Champion, Women’s Champion, and Men’s Mayacama Flight Champion are awarded their medals and trophies in a traditional awards presentation on the Mayacama Putting Green. We hope that you will join us for these great golf events at our Club. For more information, please call the Golf Shop at 707-569-2915.
GRIP IT AND RIP IT!
Have you checked your grips lately? Depending on the number of rounds you play in a year, players should have their clubs re-gripped AT LEAST once a year. Golf grips tend to wear over time, and the surface of the grips tends to lose its “tackiness”, causing players to grip their clubs tighter. Tight grip pressure leads to tension, and tension kills your golf swing. So ask a Member of the Professional Staff to take a quick look at your grips to see if they are in need of replacement. A full set of grips can usually be replaced overnight and can make a world of difference in your game. We have a full selection of grips from which to choose including putter grips, and all at competitive prices, so no need to shop elsewhere…we can provide this service for you for the same cost that you will find at off-course stores.
THE SPIRIT OF THE GOLF CAR “PILOT PROGRAM” – A REMINDER
Mayacama Golf Club was founded as a “Walking-Only” Golf Club, and we continue to hold true to that custom. We feel that playing the game while walking, especially with a Caddie is one of the features that attracted the majority of our Members to the Club. Several years ago we instituted a “Golf Car Pilot Program”, providing Members the opportunity to enjoy a late afternoon round after the Caddie cut-off time without having to carry their clubs. As a reminder, the start time for the program is 3:30 pm (Summer) and 1:30 pm (Winter - when conditions permit). Players are required to begin play from the First Hole. The reason for the program’s start time and the 1st hole start is to allow those players who wish to play after the Caddie cut-off time and walk and carry their clubs the ability to do so. If you wish to take advantage of the Golf Car “Pilot Program”, please do so in accordance with the Customs that have been established for the program for the enjoyment of all.
TWO SPOTS REMAIN...
MEN'S TRAVELING CUP MATCHES - ST. ANDREWS 2016
The Men’s Traveling Cup returns to the Home of Golf – St. Andrews, Scotland for the 2016 Men’s Traveling Cup Matches. We have two spots available on the bus. The Men’s Traveling Cup Matches are an annual trip to the UK, and this year the venues are all centered around one stop – St. Andrews!
The field of 12 players is divided by handicaps into two teams, and the teams play Four-Ball (better ball of two) Matches and Single Matches. A side receives one point for each match that is won, and ½ point for each match that ends “All Square”. At the conclusion of the matches, the winning side has their names engraved on The Men’s Traveling Cup! This year’s venues include Kingsbarns (two rounds), Lundin Links, Crail, Carnoustie, Panmure (a match against the Club Members from Panmure), Elie, and of course the courses of the St. Andrews Links. Lodging will be at The Old Course Hotel.
Please CLICK HERE to take a look at the attached Expedition Packet and contact Ted Antonopoulos at 707 569 2916 with any questions that you may have or to sign up! We hope to see you in The Auld Grey Toon – St. Andrews Scotland for the 2016 Men’s Traveling Cup Matches!

Among the great hillside Cabernet Sauvignons of the New World, Howell Mountain is legendary. Located on these storied slopes, ADAMVS is dedicated to crafting timeless mountain-grown Cabernet Sauvignons, while honoring this renowned terroir.
For centuries, the vine rows of Château Fonplégade have been the source for some of Saint-Émilion’s most coveted wine grapes. Grown in ideal limestone and clay soils, and nourished in drier years by the deep underground water source that feeds the fountain of Fonplégade, vines benefit from a harmonious relationship between the elements - a relationship that yields wines of uncommon grace and grandeur.

SPRING SPA SPECIAL - By D'arcy Connich
This Spring Mayacama Spa welcomes you to enjoy a complimentary Seaweed Detoxifying Foot Treatment with any 80-Minute Massage or Facial. This seaweed-based mud supplies sluggish cells with all indexed trace elements and minerals to jump-start enzymatic reactions, and revitalize normal cellular functions. As the cells absorb the powerful complex of nutrients and balance is achieved, cellular response becomes energized enough to eliminate stored metabolic waste. Leave this winter and all the flu’s and colds holding your body down! Detox and start this summer fresh, and beautiful!
Feel like 80 minutes is just not enough? Book a 100 minute Massage and enjoy a Reflexology treatment after your Detox Mask is removed!
Health Tip for 2016: Did you know…mild dehydration (<5% loss of body weight) can account for lack of energy, weakness, muscle soreness, rapid pulse and rough dry skin. Water losses of 9-12% total body weight can be fatal. The body can lose 2 quarts of water per hour with strenuous exercise. If fluids are not replaced, the body’s cells will lose water, which will lead to dehydration and overheating. An average adult needs to drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water per day. Coffee, soda pop and alcohol are dehydrators. For every glass of these beverages that you drink, you need to drink an extra glass of water to compensate.
Appointments: 707 569 2920 or [email protected]
Note: Therapists in the Spa may accept cash gratuity as there is no service charge percentage automatically added to treatments.

WINE NOTES - By Jeff McCarthy
Currently, I am in the planning stages of an exciting Mayacama Member trip to Bordeaux, France during the summer of 2017. The trip will include special accommodations, a tour of both the Left and Right Bank, a special visit to Château Fonplégade, city tours, and some personal time to create your own special experiences. Air travel is not included and I would recommend making this the first or last leg of your European vacation. If you would be interested in joining me on this trip, please email me at [email protected] so I can keep you up to date on travel plans. Below are some notes and photos from my amazing trip with my wife last summer! This will give you a sampling of some of the destinations the Member trip will include.
I was able to fulfill a life-long dream by visiting Bordeaux. Our stay was hosted by our gracious Vintner Members, Stephen & Denise Adams of ADAMVS and Château Fonplégade. The itinerary for our 4+ day visit was designed by Denise and her outstanding hospitality staff; allowing us to visit many of the great cities and towns, some grand chateaus and estates, and set us on an incredible journey of the local food and wine scene.
The major reason for the success of winemaking in the Bordeaux region is the excellent environment for growing vines. The Gironde estuary dominates the regions along with its tributaries, the Garonne and the Dordogne rivers, and together irrigate the land and provide an Atlantic Climate, also known as an oceanic climate, for the region. These rivers define the main geographical subdivisions of the region: "The Right Bank", is situated on the right bank of Dordogne, in the northern parts of the region, around the city of Libourne. "The Left Bank", situated on the left bank of Garonne, is in the west and south of the region, around the city of Bordeaux itself.
The “First Growths”, classified in 1855 are located on the Left Bank, known for their grand chateaus and is well suited for Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards and wineries are breath-taking and you get a real sense of history. However, I found that the real beauty of Bordeaux lies on the Right Bank, with its rolling hills, charming towns and stone buildings with Merlot and Cabernet Franc being the stars. The Left Bank may have the most prestigious chateaus, but the Right Bank’s been getting all the plaudits. The Right Bank showed that the world wanted richness, ripeness and concentration, and by doing so, set the agenda for modern claret.

Our stay began with dinner at the restaurant Logis de la Cadene in Saint-Émilion, recommended by Denise. Château Fonplégade is literally in walking distance from the town (though I will admit, a healthy walk). Our fabulous five course dinner was followed by live music in the town square with a digestivo or two. The streets were made of narrow and steep cobblestones - which took a little getting used to as we walked around town.

The next morning we started the day with a fabulous “french breakfast” and then we were picked up by a limo and headed to the Left Bank for a day of wine tasting. Our driver was very knowledgeable and was able to take show us many of the highlights and some of the great chateaus. We had a scheduled tour and tasting at Château Pichon Baron Longueville that was followed by a driving tour of the Haut-Médoc (famous appellations and wineries). We stopped by Château Lafite Rothschild and enjoyed our lunch at Café Lavinal adjacent to Lynch Bages. Following lunch we tasted wine at Château Lynch-Bages, then headed to Château Pontet-Canet.

Pontet-Canet is a wine I started drinking at 12 on Sunday nights as my father began schooling his kids on the finer art of wine and food tasting. The winery is bio-dynamically farmed and is located across a gravel road from Château Lafite. Besides the quality of the wine, I was impressed by their museum and the history it contained. As far back as the late 1800s they were already using vilification practices such as gravity flow, evening harvesting (to keep the grapes cool), and cap management - techniques still used today. We ended our tour at Château Beychevelle which reminded me a bit of Versailles - without the fountains.
The next day began with breakfast at the pool and a tour and tasting of the cellars of Château Fonplégade was followed by a romantic picnic in the vineyards. That afternoon we toured more local wineries with visits to Château La Gaffelière and Château Grand Mayne. Later that afternoon we grabbed a car for a tour of Pomerol and Lalande-de-Pomerol, including a visit Château Petrus. That evening we were on our own as we ate in the square in Saint-Émilion where we were treated to another round of music, dancing, and art hosted by the locals.
Our last day was Monday which was Bastille Day. We took a city tour of Saint-Émilion and shopped for family and friends. For dinner and fireworks, Denise and Stephen hosted us at an incredible outdoor restaurant, Les Belles Perdrix de Troplong Mondot where we had a 360 degree view of the gorgeous countryside. After an incredible five course dinner, all of the guests were escorted to the pool where we enjoyed not only the fabulous firework show in Saint-Émilion, but could view the fireworks from at least five other towns as well. We sipped Bollinger Champagne and toasted the French version of our 4th of July Independence Day. The next morning we had to catch a flight to Dublin so we reluctantly bid the winery and staff "adieu". It was an unbelievable experience we will never forget!

A SAD LOSS TO US ALL
It is with deep regret to inform everyone of the death of our dear friend and long-time Member, Marv Soiland on February 8, 2016. Marv was renowned for decades as one of the area’s top excavators of the trenches in which are laid the water, sewer, utility and storm-drain lines essential to commercial, residential and retail construction projects. Soiland’s family business also focused on the development of projects that included the high-end Shiloh Estates. The beautiful 675 acres that Mayacama is built on was purchased from Marv Soiland by David Wilhelm and his partners back in the late 90's. Needless to say many of us at Mayacama have many fond memories of Marv's gentle spirit and great sense of humor. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Soiland family. He will be missed by us all! To read more about his life, please CLICK HERE.
It is also with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Mayacama National Member Patricia Tappan on February 17, 2016. Mrs. Tappan and her husband Jim are long-time Members of Mayacama Golf Club. In fact, it was Patricia who was instrumental in the Tappan’s decision to become Members of our Mayacama Family. During a trip to the Bay Area to visit family, Patricia insisted that Mayacama become their West Coast home. Mrs. Tappan loved the game of golf and we shall all miss her. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Aycock Funeral Home Young & Prill Chapel in Stuart, Florida. For flowers or to sign the family’s guest book, please CLICK HERE.
