New Rules decision limits use of video review
The USGA and R&A have together introduced a new Decision on the Rules of Golf, which will limit the use of Video Review. The new decision, which is effective immediately, will implement two standards for Rules Committees to limit the use of video.
The first standard is when video reveals evidence that could not be reasonably seen with the “naked eye”, as was the case when Anna Nordavist unknowingly brushed several grains of sand while taking a backswing in a bunker during a playoff in the U.S. Women’s Open. After video evidence was used, Nordqvist was subsequently penalized and lost the championship to Brittany Lang.
The second standard is when players use their “reasonable judgment” to determine a specific location when applying the Rules. This was the case in the recent ruling involving Lexi Thompson not replacing her ball in a specific spot. Other scenarios under this standard include determining a specific spot where a ball last crossed the margin of a hazard. In most of these cases, a player’s reasonable judgment will be accepted even if shown to be inaccurate because of video evidence.
Still under evaluation is the use of “call-in” information from sources other than participants in the competition, and the application of penalties after a scorecard has been returned. These evaluations are being considered, and hopefully implemented by a working group made up of the USGA, R&A, Men’s and Women’s Professional Tours and the Rules Committee of the PGA of America.
Here are two links from the USGA and Golf Week which offer more information on the new decision, including the complete wording of the decision.

Music on the Golf Course
Mark Twain once called the game of Golf “a good walk spoiled” … but Mark Twain never played a round of Golf at Mayacama! Here Members enjoy the serenity of 18 holes of Golf spread out over 675 acres of some of the California Wine Country’s most serene landscape. Often times our Members comment on just how quiet the experience can be … just the footsteps and the sound of the club striking the golf ball.
And then there are times when the hills are alive with the sound of Led Zepplin’s “Whole Lotta Love”, or Jamey Johnson belting out “Gotta Get Back to Macon” wafting from some golfer’s portable sound system from an adjacent fairway. So what is our stand on the ever-increasing popularity of music being played while on the Golf Course? We have our own opinions but have also consulted some of America’s great Clubs on the matter. While many do not allow it period, others seem to share two common denominators … that if the people in your group unanimously do not object to it … and it absolutely positively cannot be heard by anyone outside of your own group, then whom does it hurt? However, keep in mind that sound travels easily through these hills and extra precaution and awareness should be first and foremost in your mind when playing music.
Our ideal scenario is to honor the traditions of our great game and play without delay, without complaint, and without external audio intruding on the quiet nature of the game. If you prefer to play the game with music as a soundtrack to your game, then earbuds would be the preferred method. At Mayacama, we never wish for one’s game to be interrupted by the likes of beverage carts, course rangers, cutting in, nor by the distraction of unwanted music coming from another group of players on the Golf Course. We appreciate your observance in maintaining the quiet and respectful nature of the game at Mayacama.
Husband Wife Championship
We apologize for our mistake in the original Husband & Wife Championship Invitation for 2017. In 2016, the Championship Flight Champions were Mike & Tina Feeney with a great score of 78. In the Mayacama Flight, Greg & Lisa French successfully defended their title from 2015 and won with a phenomenal score of 63.
