Mayacama Head Professional Named to NCAA Championship Committee

We are pleased to announce that our Head Golf Professional Ted Antonopoulos has been asked to join the NCAA Championship Committee for the 2017 Men’s Division I NCAA Championships. Ted will be officiating at the National Championships at Rich Harvest Farms, May 25 – 31, 2017. Thirty teams  have qualified to advance to the finals along with 6 individuals. After 72 holes of Stroke Play, 8 teams will advance to the Match Play portion of the Championship and will be seeded according to their finish in Stroke Play.

“It’s an honor to be invited to officiate at the NCAA National Championships. Since becoming a Member of the PGA of America Rules Committee, I have had the opportunity to see up close some of the best golfers in the world, and the NCAA Championship certainly fits that bill.” The event takes place over Memorial Day weekend and competes with the Mayacama Cup Match Play Championship. Though it was a difficult decision to miss a championship that Antonopoulos introduced to the Club 16 years ago, it’s only fitting that he accept this prestigious honor and travel to Chicago to officiate at the National Championship. “The Mayacama Cup could be my favorite championship that we conduct at the Club. This time of year with the native grasses in their full glory, our course sets up beautifully for Match Play, where anything can happen. It’s my favorite format.” Indeed, the NCAA Championship includes the Match Play format to ultimately name the NCAA Division I Men’s Champions.

As a Referee, Ted will be assigned to specific group(s) and accompanying them through both the stroke play and match play portions of the Championship. You can follow the Championship live on the Golf Channel at the scheduled times listed below. But according to Ted, he does not wish to be featured on the telecast. “The responsibilities of a Referee are always interesting, whether it’s the Mayacama Cup or the National Championship. You see some incredible golf but you never know when you will be called upon to assist a player, and you need to be well prepared when the time comes. Someone once said that officiating is several hours of boredom, followed by 15 minutes of sheer terror … and hopefully not on TV!”

In addition to the Golf Channel, you can also follow the scoring live on Golfstat.com. Here is a list of the 30 schools competing, along with those individuals who are competing for the individual title.
