Golf Course Update
by Dale Engman
I would like to remind and update everyone on the upcoming aeration and re-grassing schedule. Please see below as there are some minor changes.
Aeration
Club & Course Closed: Monday, October 3rd - Thursday, October 6th
Club & Course Reopen: Friday, October 7th
Re-Grassing Phase II
Hole 11-18 Closed : Monday October 10th - Tentatively, Wednesday, November 23rd
Our focus this Fall with regard to aeration is to maintain playability immediately following the process while still achieving our agronomic goals. While this is always our mindset, this year our processes will be adjusted slightly to allow for playability to be very close to normal upon re-opening. The aeration holes will be smaller and the sand lighter, allowing play to continue very close to normal.
We have a slight change in the re-grassing schedule from previously announced. Due to contractor availability we are unable to start the re-grassing work until Monday October 10th. Previously, we were scheduled to begin on October 3rd. While this pushes back the schedule one week, it allows us to open all 18 holes for 3 days prior to the work commencing.

The entire golf course, all 18 holes, will be open Friday, October 7th to Sunday October 9th. Greens 1-10 will be aerated but the remaining greens, 11-18 will not be aerated and play as normal.
Recently I took a trip to British Columbia to evaluate the grass being grown for us and I couldn't be happier. The turf is young, healthy, has good density and is ready to be shipped down and planted here. We are all very excited to get this process underway and return Mayacama to the consistent conditions we all expect.
Please remember, throughout the construction process we will have holes 1-10 open and playing as normal so please don’t hesitate to come out, enjoy the course and Fall at Mayacama.

FIRST FRIDAY POUR: BLACK KITE CELLARS
Friday, October 7
5:30pm - 6:30pm

Black Kite Cellars is a small, family owned and operated winery, dedicated to producing the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay using the best growing and wine making practices applied to vineyards ideally situated for these classic Burgundian varietals. Mayacama member Don Green’s daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Tom Birdsall, fell in love with the wines and life style of Burgundy during a bike tour. They believed they could apply the Burgundian terroir oriented approach in California and created Black Kite Cellars in 2003. The Kite, Don’s favorite bird, can be seen gracefully hovering over Mayacama in search of prey.
The wine making team features Jeff Gaffner, owner and wine maker at Saxon Brown, one of the stars of the California wine scene. Jeff has become one of the most sought after consulting wine makers for artisan labels, having gained critical acclaim and a loyal following for his site-specific focus and restrained wine making style. The Wall Street Journal has said that they “love his vineyard voice”, while the Wine Spectator has lauded his wine making as “deft”. He was named wine maker of the year in 1999 and is featured in the May 31st issue of the Wine Spectator.
Their mix of vineyards and styles offer wine drinkers an enticing menu with wines to drink and cellar now. Black Kite’s vineyard sources include the Anderson Valley in Mendocino, Sonoma Coast and the Santa Lucia Highlands. Their wines are vibrant, with intense character and they show the power and elegance.

FISHER FAMILY WINEMAKER DINNER
Saturday, October 22
6:00pm - 9:00pm
$125pp++
The winery was founded in 1973, when Fred and Juelle purchased 100 acres in the Mayacamas Mountains on the western slope of Spring Mountain. There, they built a winery tucked in among the vines and Douglas Firs. The winery itself is a product of the estate, having been built from the timber that was cut and milled on-site and crafted into an award-winning facility by their good friend and architect, William Turnbull.
In 1976, the family found another 57 acres on the Silverado Trail in the Napa Valley. The property runs from the Napa River to the Eastern Vaca Range, adjacent to the famed Eisele Vineyard, and is the source of our Lamb Vineyard Cabernet, Coach Insignia Cabernet and Cameron, Bordeaux Blend.
Their Mission
To grow and produce wines of consistent, world-class quality that express their unique mountain or valley heritage in the truest sense of terroir; the resulting wines should pay tribute to the land we are fortunate to care for, as well as each member of our team, which together will yield classic balance and style that transcends time.
"We are small in size but great in scope with both mountain and valley estate vineyards. Our wines reflect the great care we have given these vineyards; those who drink the wines and those who write about the wines sing their praise, and we are grateful."

Recap: Mayacama Heirloom Tomato Festival
By Jeff McCarthy
On Saturday, September 17th, Mayacama and Kendall Jackson hosted 30 of our members and their guests for a private, smaller version of the Annual Heirloom Tomato Festival. Upon our arrival we were greeted with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Guests toured the tasting room and shopped while the rest of our folks were arriving.
Our afternoon then began at the grape tasting garden that featured all of the varieties of grapes produce by KJ. Our group was able to taste the different varietals and learn about what the winemaker looks as he/she is making their decisions on when to pick.
Next stop the garden, where comfortable seating areas were set up for our wine and food pairings. We enjoyed various KJ wines along with passed hors d’oeuvres along with cheese and charcuterie. As the afternoon wore on, fresh garden vegetables, a great salad and wood-fired pizza were served. Many of our guests strolled through the gardens tended by Master Gardener Tucker Taylor, formerly of the French Laundry.
The Mayacama Heirloom Tomato Festival is an annual event held in August or September just before the KJ’s grand event. It is open to all members and their guests. 2016 was our 5th year hosting this event and feedback suggested it was the most fun by far. Don’t miss out next year. We are currently in the planning stages for 2017.

Fall SPA SPECIAL
By D'Arcy Connich
Summer has come to an end and Fall is upon us! All the fun we have been having in the Sun all summer long has been wreaking havoc on our skin! Although we are great at applying SPF to our face and body our hands are often left exposed due to having to wash them constantly and not diligently reapplying SPF. Our hands get the least amount of attention when it comes to Anti-Aging! This Fall Mayacama Spa is offering a complimentary Glycolic Hand Treatment with every 80 Minute Vitamin C Facial. With this treatment we will exfoliate, hydrate and massage those overworked hands and add to the relaxation already achieved by this fabulous facial!
(Vitamin C Facial with Glycolic Hand Treatment Regular Price $225. Special Price $185)
Health tip
As school starts so does Flu Season! Here are some helpful ideas for fighting the flu…
1. Sleep as much as you can and avoid contact with others until you have been fever-free — without taking any medication — for 24 to 48 hours. When you’re resting, place an extra pillow under your head to help drain your nasal passages and make sleeping more comfortable.
2. Gargling with water or salt water may help reduce swelling in the throat and loosen mucus. For extra protection from flu symptoms, consider gargling with green tea. Green tea has catechins, a type of antioxidant which may help prevent the infection. Gargling 3 times a day is recommended.
3. Zinc lozenges can help you feel better faster if you start using them as soon as you feel fluish. Zinc helps boost immunity, which can shorten the duration or severity of the flu.
4. If you have a fever, you are at risk for dehydration. Warm beverages like hot tea can be especially soothing for flu symptoms.
5. Carnosine, a compound in chicken soup, can help strengthen the body's immune system and help fight off the flu in its early days. Hot liquids relieve nasal congestion, help you stay hydrated, and soothe inflamed membranes in your nose and throat.
6. If congestion is making you miserable, using a neti pot can help get rid of excess mucus. These saline washes help flush mucus out of the nasal passages. Rinse with a neti pot twice a day if you are stuffed up and fighting a cold or the flu.
7. Steaming up your bathroom or taking a steamy shower can help moisturize your nasal passages.
