ANCHORING - UNDERSTANDING THE RULE CHANGE
Rule 14-1b, which prohibits anchoring the club when making a stroke, goes into effect on January 1, 2016. Here is a link to explain how the rule will be applied, and answer some of the frequently asked questions regarding this new rule. As always, please feel free to contact a member of your Professional Staff if you need clarification on this and other Rules of Golf.
RECAP - JUNIOR GOLF Boot Camp 2015
36 Junior Golfers took place in the Annual Mayacama Junior Golf Boot Camp on July 29 - 31. The Camp featured your Mayacama Professional Staff, who spent 3 days instructing the Cadets in all areas of the game of golf from etiquette, full swing and short game skills, and the Rules of Golf. The Camp was capped off by a 5-hole Scramble Tournament on a course specially designed for the Cadets. In the tournament, players were treated to a total “tournament experience”, complete with first tee announcements, walking referees, and a PGA Tour-quality scoreboard! Results of the Boot Camp Tournament, along with the special contests are listed below. So that you can plan your 2016 participation in Mayacama Junior Golf Boot Camp, please make note of next year’s date: July 27 – 29, 2016.

Annual Championships of Mayacama Golf Club
It was the largest field to date as nearly 50 players braved perfect weather and 3 days of Stroke Play at Mayacama! Golf Course Superintendent Dale Engman and his staff produced perfect golf course conditions, and the Championship Committee’s course set-up provided a challenge that tested the player’s skills and patience in tournament conditions. And thanks to the Checkpoint Pace of Play system, the players played without delay! In the end, the 2015 Championships produced four Champions worthy of having their names etched on their respective trophies on display at the Club.
2015 Women’s Club Champion - Marlena Palyo
Marlena Palyo captured her third title in as many tries as she led the field wire to wire with scores of 75 - 85 - 82 = 242.
2015 Women’s Mayacama Flight Champion - Malin Giddings
Malin Giddings returns to the Winners Circle by being the only player to better net par over 54 holes at Mayacama in this year’s Annual Championship of Mayacama Golf Club. Giddings’ three-day total of five under par 211 was more than enough as she finished 17 strokes ahead of runner-up Laura Allen, playing in her first Club Championship.
Men’s Mayacama Flight Champion - Paul Puccioni
For the second year in a row, the score of level par was good enough to claim the Mayacama Flight Club Championship Trophy. Matching last year’s even-par 216 total is this year’s Champion Paul Puccioni, who joins John Stewart and John Friedemann in becoming the third Member to claim both the Mayacama Cup and the Club Championship titles in the same year (Mayacama Flight). It was a seesaw battle between Puccioni, 2014 Champion Gabe Donohoe, Men’s Senior Club Champion John Reininga and others over the 54-hole endurance battle, but ultimately it was Puccioni who held on to prevail with an even-par total of 216, seven shots ahead of runner-up Reininga and ten over 2015 Champion Donohoe.

Brady Exber - Mayacama Golf Club’s
“Champion Golfer of the Year”
Brady Exber has had quite a year in 2015, playing in the British Senior Open at Sunningdale near London, and following that up with a trip to Northern Ireland and Royal County Down to defend his British Senior Amateur Championship, a title he won at Ganton in 2014. After surviving torrential rains at Sunningdale, and wind gusts of 30mph at Royal County Down, Exber enjoyed near-perfect conditions at Mayacama as he claimed his third Club Championship title. For the first two days, it was a tight race between Exber, 2013 Club Champion Mark Mance, and six-time Club Champion Ned Zachar as they separated themselves from a quality field of players. With just 7 holes to play in Sunday’s final round, Zachar led by one on the 12th tee. But after a double bogey six and a two-shot swing, Exber led by one with six to go, and he never looked back! Exber finished Sunday’s round with 73 for a 3-day total of 226 strokes, with Zachar taking sole-second at 229, three strokes back.

OUR MEMBERS IN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS!
Brady Exber competes in the 2015 British Senior Open and 2015 Senior (British) Amateur Championships
Three-time Mayacama Club Champion Brady Exber competed in the British Senior Open Championship at historic Sunningdale Golf Club near London earlier this summer. Exber earned his spot in the Senior Open as a result of winning of last year’s British Senior Amateur Championship at Ganton. After competing in the Senior Open where he narrowly missed the cut, Exber headed to Northern Ireland to defend his Senior Amateur Championship Title. After braving three days of high winds off the Irish Sea, Exber finished T-37 out of a strong field of 144 players. The eventual winner was Pat Tallent of Virginia, who added the British Senior Amateur to his US Senior Amateur won last year at Big Canyon in Newport Beach. Congratulations to Brady and his accomplishments in National and International Championships! It’s something that should make us all proud, knowing that a Mayacama Member has his name etched on a silver championship trophy inside the hallowed halls of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews!
Scott Mitchell Goes to Semi-Finals in the NCGA Amateur Match Play Championship
Backing up his strong play in the US Junior Amateur Championship, Scott played his way into the Semi-Final Matches in the 112th NCGA Amateur Match Play Championship at Spyglass Hill Golf Club on the Monterey Peninsula. From a field of 156 players, Mitchell qualified as the 14th seed in the 32-player Match Play bracket. He played his way through a strong field before losing to Matt Cohn in the semi-final matches. Cohn lost to eventual winner and the No. 2 ranked Amateur and Stanford Junior Maverick McNeeley.
Ben Albin Advances to Match Play in (British) Boys Amateur Championship
Southport, England – We are constantly reminded just what a small world is when it comes to golf, and that was certainly the case just weeks ago in Southport England. As 12 Members of the Mayacama Traveling Cup were about to board their bus to take them to their match at Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club, they spotted a Mayacama Golf Bag in the lobby of The Vincent Hotel. The bag belonged to Mayacama Member Ben Albin, who was in Southport with his Dad David Albin to compete in the Boys Amateur Championship at Southport & Ainsdale and Royal Birkdale. Albin was among 255 players who attempted to qualify for the 64 player Match Play Bracket. Albin qualified with rounds of 73-74 = 147 (+4). He fell short of advancing to the second round of match play when he lost his match to Keegan De Lange of South Africa. Albin now heads to Notre Dame where he will compete on the Men’s Golf Team for the Fighting Irish!
A great showing this summer for Mayacama Members competing in National (and International) Championships!
A WORD ABOUT HANDICAPS
As a reminder to ALL players, the Club is now posting for Handicap purposes all Tournament Scores and scores from the weekly Skins Game.
Regarding non-tournament scores, we encourage everyone to post a score for every round played, as long as that round is played in accordance with the Rules of Golf. The Club will monitor the number of “Rounds Played vs. Rounds Posted”, and should the need arise, implement a program where a penalty score may be posted when a player continually plays a round without posting. A penalty score is a score that is equal to the lowest Handicap Differential in the player’s current scoring record.
Remember to keep in mind the two basic premises that underlie the USGA Handicap System, namely that each player will try to make the best score at every hole in every round, regardless of where the round is played, and that the player will post every acceptable round for peer review. Acceptable scores are those scores played in accordance with the Rules of Golf. The player and your Tournament Committee have joint responsibility for adhering to these premises. The Handicap System is not perfect, but it’s the only one we’ve got, and we shall do our part to uphold its integrity, along with the integrity of our Club.
Please feel free to contact a member of the Professional Staff if you have any questions or comments about the USGA Handicap System, or refer to the Handicap Manual by visiting the USGA Website.
