Congratulations to all of the players who celebrated the Fourth Playing of the Parent-Child at Mayacama. We had twenty teams compete in either the 9-hole or 18-hole divisions. The 9-hole version is competed using a modified alternate shot format played at scratch and “Play It Forward” tees used for the smaller competitors. The format in the 18-hole division is called Chapman or Pinehurst which uses a combination of better-ball and alternate shot to determine the best “team” among the players. Both divisions were fun and competitive, with the 18-hole division going extra holes before Team Silveira (Jim and Scott) outlasted team Lovett (Allen and Parker) on the first playoff hole. Congratulations to the winners and all who celebrated this special day of golf with their loved ones!

The 11th Annual Men's Senior Club Championship consisted of many past champions and fog delays both mornings. After the weather delays, the Championship got off to a great start in Round 1 with an even par gross score of 72 from Paul Balatti. Paul Balatti birdied the last three holes to take a 7 stroke lead into the final round over Paul Puccioni in the Senior Flight. Paul Puccioni fired a first round 79 for a net 70 to take the Round 1 Senior Mayacama Flight lead.
In the Super Senior Division, John Stewart had the lead after the first day with an 85 and Dwight Haldan had the Mayacama Flight lead with a net score of 71. In the end, Paul Balatti successfully defended his title and won his 8th Men's Senior Club Championship and Paul Puccioni won his first Men's Senior Club Championship Mayacama Flight. The Super Senior Champion and returning for his 3rd title in the Championship was John Stewart, and the Super Senior Mayacama Flight Champion was Dwight Haldan winning his 2nd title with a great total score of 1 over par 145.

One of our more popular events at Mayacama Golf Club is the Caddie-Member. This unique event enables Members and Caddies to share the special bond formed between as fellow competitors! Using the Four-Ball Stroke Play format, the Caddie-Member awards Champions Cups to the winners of the Championship Flight and the Mayacama Flight (played with full handicap), but also awards a great day of golf shared by the teammates. The event is followed with a wonderful buffet luncheon and then a raffle. Raffle prizes are generously donated by our Mayacama Members and every Caddie, whether competitor or working Caddie for the event, walks away with a lovely gift to commemorate the occasion.

The Course is Back!!! That was the overwhelming response from the 36 players who competed in the Sixteenth Playing of the Annual Championship of Mayacama Golf Club, and indeed it was. Green speeds were back to their championship level and consistent fast. Hole locations challenged the players and the fairways were firm and fast! Golf Course Superintendent Dale Engman and his staff received praise throughout the championship from the competitors, and rightfully so, … it was perfect!
THE WOMEN
54 holes of Stroke Play determined this year’s Champions … but that wasn’t quite enough for the Women’s Championship Flight! Mayumi Post and Carol Hansel had to make it 55 holes when they ended up tied after regulation to force a Sudden-Death Playoff. Mayumi Post took the title on the first playoff hole giving her the Champions Medal. Laura Allen claimed the Women’s Mayacama Flight Medal with Carol Hansel taking the Silver Salver for the Runner-Up spot in the Mayacama Flight (and the Championship Flight as well).
THE MEN
Defending Champion Paul Puccioni looked like he was set to defend his Mayacama Flight Title after getting it to red figures for 36 holes, but he could not hold off Gabe Donohoe in the final round. Donohoe’s steady performance and four over par total of 220 strokes was enough to capture his second Champions Medal.
With his one over par score of 217 strokes Ned Zachar claimed the title of “Champion Golfer of the Year of Mayacama Golf Club” … his seventh such title! Zachar started the Championship with a bang, carding four birdies and an eagle on the front nine, and still finished the round at -1 even after a triple bogey at the last. Even after suffering a triple bogey 8 at the last, he still finished the round with a one under par 71. He followed that up with back to back 73’s for a 54 hole total of one over par 217, which ties the Championship record set by Brady Exber in the 2014 Championship.

The wine making team features Jeff Gaffner, owner and wine maker at Saxon Brown, one of the stars of the California wine scene. Jeff has become one of the most sought after consulting wine makers for artisan labels, having gained critical acclaim and a loyal following for his site-specific focus and restrained wine making style. The Wall Street Journal has said that they “love his vineyard voice”, while the Wine Spectator has lauded his wine making as “deft”. He was named wine maker of the year in 1999 and is featured in the May 31st issue of the Wine Spectator. Their mix of vineyards and styles offer wine drinkers an enticing menu with wines to drink and cellar now. Black Kite’s vineyard sources include the Anderson Valley in Mendocino, Sonoma Coast and the Santa Lucia Highlands. Their wines are vibrant, with intense character and they show the power and elegance. Click HERE to register or call 707.569.2900
The winery was founded in 1973, when Fred and Juelle purchased 100 acres in the Mayacamas Mountains on the western slope of Spring Mountain. There, they built a winery tucked in among the vines and Douglas Firs. The winery itself is a product of the estate, having been built from the timber that was cut and milled on-site and crafted into an award-winning facility by their good friend and architect, William Turnbull. In 1976, the family found another 57 acres on the Silverado Trail in the Napa Valley. The property runs from the Napa River to the Eastern Vaca Range, adjacent to the famed Eisele Vineyard, and is the source of our Lamb Vineyard Cabernet, Coach Insignia Cabernet and Cameron, Bordeaux Blend. Their Mission "We are small in size but great in scope with both mountain and valley estate vineyards. Our wines reflect the great care we have given these vineyards; those who drink the wines and those who write about the wines sing their praise, and we are grateful."
