About Stuhlmuller

The rich history of the Stuhlmuller property goes all the way back to 1800's mountain-man and rancher, Cyrus Alexander, for whom the Alexander Valley is named. Part of Alexander’s original 9000-acre ranch, today’s Stuhlmuller Vineyard has undergone many incarnations. Although grapes were likely planted on the property before 1900, Prohibition wiped out nearly all of the valley’s vineyards and by the 1930s it was dotted with orchards and cattle pastures.

In 1982, Roger and Carmen Stuhlmuller purchased a 150-acre property located at the southwestern edge of the Alexander Valley. Impressed by the quality of the 90-acres of original 1970’s vine plantings, the Stuhlmullers realized the remarkable viticultural potential of the land.

The 150-acre Stuhlmuller Vineyard is located in northern Sonoma County, where the Alexander, Dry Creek, and Russian River valleys come together. With vines planted at the convergence of these three, highly regarded Sonoma appellations, Stuhlmuller Vineyards occupies a unique place in the county’s viticulture. Located at the southwestern edge of the Alexander Valley, along the banks of the Russian River, Stuhlmuller Vineyards possesses gravel, clay, and volcanic soils. The geology of this terrain was formed during thousands of years of alluvial fan movement and flooding. Today, these ancient soils, along with the area’s distinctive microclimate, provide the ideal environment for growing world-class Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Zinfandel.

From a hillside on the western edge of the property, a fourth Sonoma County appellation, Chalk Hill, is visible. On summer mornings, fog rolls in through the Chalk Hill gap where the river makes its way southwest through Alexander Valley. As afternoon temperatures rise, the fog burns off. Next, maritime breezes from the Pacific Ocean enter the gap, and the vines cool off once again. This typically means a temperature drop of five degrees or more in the late afternoon, a cooling phenomenon referred to as the “Venturi Effect.” Stuhlmuller Vineyards is planted to 90 acres of Chardonnay and 57 acres of the Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Verdot. The remaining three acres are planted to Zinfandel and Petite Sirah.

Wines from Stuhmuller Vineyards have always been part of Mayamaca, featured by the glass, at Club functions, and in the Villas and Casitas. They have always offered great pricing, bringing Mayacama Members solid wines and below market pricing. For the 2012 Vintage, Robert Parker has singled out a number of Stuhlmuller wines. We are offering them out along with the standards our members have become used to.

2012 Stuhlmuller Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Block Eight (Rating 94+)
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Block Eight is a winner from Alexander Valley with 25+ years of upside potential. Abundant aromas of spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, graphite and espresso intermixed with subtle smoke are present in this dense purple-colored 2012 with oodles of character and richness. Young and promising, future tasters are going to be blown away by the complexity and quality of this cuvée. Drink 2018-2035+.

2012 Stuhlmuller Vineyards Pinot Noir Star Ridge Cooper (Rating 92)
In contrast to the Star Ridge Amber, the 2012 Pinot Noir Star Ridge Cooper possesses a similar sexy texture, but it shows more earthy, peppery, baking spice, cinnamon and nutmeg characteristics intertwined with red currant, plum and cherry fruit. Another beauty, it should drink nicely for 5-7 years.

2012 Stuhlmuller Vineyards Chardonnay Summit Five (Rating 91)
Even more complex than the estate Chardonnay is the 2012 Chardonnay Summit Five, which reveals more orange blossom, crème brûlée and brioche notes, a hint of hazelnuts, and a medium to full-bodied, long finish. I liked the greenish hue to its light gold color, always a good sign. Consume it over the next 5-6 years.

2012 Stuhlmuller Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (Rating 91)
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate displays lots of chocolaty, crème de cassis, cedarwood and spice notes intertwined with a hint of oak. Full-bodied, rich, concentrated and youthful as well as approachable, it should drink well for 15 or more years.

2012 Stuhlmuller Vineyards Chardonnay Estate (Rating 89)
A percentage of the 2012 Chardonnay Estate comes from the same clone planted on the famous Alexander Mountain estate of Jess Jackson-s (the Upper Barn clone of Chardonnay). The wine is aged for eight months, half in oak and half in stainless steel. The impression is one of a full-throttle Maconnais with loads of white peach, apricot, honeysuckle and buttered/caramelized citrus. It is elegant, fresh, seems relatively neutral when it comes to oak seasonings, and has good depth and richness. This is a beauty to drink over the next several years.
