Summer is almost here! It’s time for parties, picnics, barbecues, and outdoor fun! Selecting wines to pair with your summer parties is just as important as the dishes you're serving. While roses, aromatic whites, and reds are great barbecue wines, in this wine offer we are going to focus on some of Jeff McCarthy's favorites. He's a big fan of Burgundian varietals so today he has selected three Chardonnays and three Pinot Noirs from our list of Vintner Members.
Chardonnay
2012 DuMOL ‘estate’, Russian River Valley
Robert Parker says "I would have to rank DuMOL as one of my favorite half dozen producers of California Chardonnay." This Chardonnay is spectacular. It offers hints of pineapple, creme caramel, ripe pears and a wet gravelly minerality. The wine is full-bodied with terrific acidity, delineation, uplift and freshness.
2013 Kistler, Sonoma Mountain
This Chardonnay shows great finesse. It is pale yellow gold color with green tints. The wine shows impressive aromas of citrus blossom, almonds and wet stones followed by a chalky mineral overtone. Spicy and sharply focused, the Sonoma Mountain Chardonnay offers penetrating orchard and stone fruit flavors. The mineral element repeats strongly in the acid-driven finish.
2012 Stonestreet Mountain Estate, Alexander Mountain
This Chardonnay is consistently one of the most stone-driven wines from the mountain. In 2012 it delivers those minerals alongside a strong citrus element. Tangerine and marmalade emerge first from the glass, opening to a palate that cascades through peach and ocean spray—all culminating in a finish with surprising grip and acidity.
Pinot Noir
2013 Armida, Gap’s Crown, Sonoma Coast
Beautiful aromas of wild flowers, cherry and huckleberry are followed by truffles and baking chocolate. On the palate precise and textured with forward chocolate cherry and briary fruit. Notes of orange flower and fennel seed define a long and smooth finish.
2012 Lynmar, Quail Hill, Lynn’s Blend, Russian River Valley
The Quail Hill Vineyard Lynn’s Blend Pinot Noir displays a dark garnet color. The aromatics are filled with blueberry and blackberry accents intertwined with star anise, green tea, and violets. A firm mid-palate offers copious amounts of pluot, dark cherry and pink peppercorns. As the Lynn’s Blend finishes, it is replete with firm tannins, ripe plum, sandalwood and molasses.
2012 Miner Family Vineyards, Gary’s Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands
Impressed by the world-class grapes grown by Gary Pisoni and Gary Fransisco, Miner began sourcing fruit from Monterey's Santa Lucia Highlands in 1997. This well-known and loved vineyard is marked by sandy loam soils, dense fog and coastal winds and backed by fastidious growing practices. Made in a Burgundian style, Gary’s Pinot Noir is richly textured with bright cherry flavors, balanced by subtle oak.
