Mayacama's Head Professional Officiating at US Amateur
Pebble Beach, CA – Please join us in congratulating Mayacama Golf Club’s Ted Antonopoulos, who was invited by the USGA to officiate at the US Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach. Antonopoulos is a Member of the USGA’s Senior Amateur Championship Committee and the PGA of America Rules Committee. This will be his 6th USGA Championship that he has served as a Rules Official.
A native of Augusta, Georgia, the Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach has a special meaning for Ted. “It was certainly an honor to receive the invitation from the USGA to work the US Amateur, especially at such a wonderful venue like Pebble Beach. It has special meaning for me because it was at Pebble Beach in 1929 that Bobby Jones was upset in the first round of match play by a virtually unknown player named Johnny Goodman. With time on his hands, Jones went over to play a round at a new club on the Monterey Peninsula … Cypress Point Club! This made it possible for him to rekindle an old relationship with Dr. Alister Mackenzie and ultimately led to the selection of Mackenzie to be the architect of Augusta National Golf Club.”
312 players will compete in the Stroke Play portion of the US Amateur with one round each at Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill. After Stroke Play, the field will be cut to 64 players who will then compete in Match Play for the Championship.
Ted will be sending daily updates from Pebble Beach, so stay tuned! The first update is included below.
US Amateur Championship
Arrived at Pebble Beach Saturday night for the Players Reception. Magical setting outdoors behind the 18th Green. It was 17 years ago today that Mayacama Golf Club opened its doors for play. We had one player that day … Jack Nicklaus! He shot 71 and the rest is history. So upon entering the reception, who’s the first person we see? 1961 US Amateur Champion at Pebble Beach, Jack Nicklaus! We fondly remembered that day at Mayacama and it was clear that Jack and Barbara hold Mayacama near and dear to them.
The players are so young! 312 of the best Amateurs in the world will begin Stroke Play tomorrow morning with the goal of making it to the 64 who advance to Match Play! The oldest player is Paul Simson (67) who next month will be competing at Mayacama in the Trans-Mississippi Four-Ball. The youngest is 14 year old Gavin Lane. Jack Nicklaus’ son, 49-year-old Gary is in the field, as is Thomas Lehman Jr., son of Open Champion Tom Lehman.
Mayacama Wyndham Cuppers in the field include Garrett Barber, John Pak, Cole Hammer, Joe Highsmith, and Travis Vick. Hammer and Barber teamed together to win the 2018 USGA Four-Ball Championship earlier this year.
Today we have the Rules Committee Meeting and course tour. For tomorrow’s assignment, I’ll be covering the 9th & 13th holes at Pebble Beach. Will be hard to concentrate with that view!
