MAYACAMA Effort to eliminate bottled water
In the interest of eliminating unnecessary waste and to be better stewards of our environment, Mayacama Golf Club will no longer be offering complimentary bottled water on the Golf Course and throughout the Clubhouse. We realize this new policy is a change, and therefore, we will work with everyone to ensure a smooth transition. Effective immediately, we will place water canteens inside the cooler at the golf Practice Facility available for purchase. A “sign up” sheet will be placed on the top of the cooler and we’ll ask our Members to write their name down so we may charge you for a canteen based on an “honor system.” We will continue to provide bottled water in the same cooler, but please be advised we plan to entirely eliminate them by July 31, 2018. (The canteens are also available for purchase in the Golf Shop and at the Pool) As of August 1, the only water available will be from the drinking fountains/ bottle filling stations that we installed on the golf course a few years ago. The water is cold and filtered, and we ask that you fill your canteens to fulfill your needs. Additionally, we are going to install drinking fountains/ bottle filling stations at the Snack Bar at the Turn as well as another one in the Fitness Room. Bottled water will continue to be made available for purchase at the Snack Bar.
Below are a few interesting points that we feel are worth noting:
- 8 million tons of plastic enter the water from land each year
- 50 billion water bottles were used in 2015 in the US alone
- For every 5lbs of fish in the ocean, there is 1lb of plastic, and this is expected to reach a 1:1 ratio by 2050 if plastics are continued to be used
- Only one in six plastic bottles are recycled properly
Thank you for your participation as we work together to eliminate the unnecessary waste that plastic water bottles create. We appreciate your support.
