The sun is beginning to warm, finishing with an extended dusk, and announcing that spring is finally here. We want to eat lighter meals: the new season’s vegetables are not quite in yet but we can at least plan for summer and that means a spring clean of the cellar, pushing the full bodied reds to the back and assessing what lighter reds we want to enjoy in the new season.
The idea of changing the wine you drink with the season, just as you change your diet and your wardrobe still meets some resistance. People tend to ‘like what they like’ when it comes to wine, drinking the same bottles right through the year. The more pronounced acidity and palate weight of lighter wines may not be to your taste, but try them with the right kind of food and you’ll see how perfectly tuned they are to the flavors of spring. Spring lamb, baby lettuces, beans, fresh herbs, berries…..all signs of the new season. Our April wine offer features the best red wine for Spring…..Pinot Noir. Our offer has six affordable Pinot Noirs…perfect for Spring. Sante!
The Wines
2017 Benovia, Russian River Valley
Vibrant fruit and spice aromas and layered texture. Aromas are dominated by red fruit tones of black cherry and boysenberry, while black fruits dominate on the palate. The vibrant aromas expand and give way to red plum, toasted brioche and allspice. On the palate the wine has integrated acidity and fine tannins that should allow for mid-term cellaring. As always the wine was bottled without fining or filtration.
2014 Champ de Rêves, Anderson Valley
Vibrant blueberry-strawberry fruit intertwines with aromas of dark-red rose, maple, licorice, and toasted hazelnut. On the palate, juicy raspberry, dark cocoa, and pennyroyal flavors emerge. Delicately-balanced acidity and crystalline minerality lead into a firmly structured finish.
2016 Hartford Court, Russian River Valley
Aromas of black cherry, allspice, black currant and loam are followed by flavors of wild raspberries, dark berries and a crushed rock minerality. The dense entry is followed by a sweet and juicy mouthfeel, supported by acidity, silky tannins and a subtle earthy finish.
2017 Lynmar Russian River Valley
A bright, clear garnet in the glass, this vintage opens with beautiful aromas of strawberry and red cranberry, accented with notes of hibiscus and sandalwood. On the palate, the red fruit tones lengthen to fresh cherry and cranberry, joined by flavors of baking spice, chicory, and cocoa powder on the finish.
2014 32 Winds, Maestro, Russian River Valley
This wine is a gorgeous garnet in color with an earthy meatiness on the nose. Spicy berry welcomes you with sweet juicy Santa Rosa plum sliding in along with dark Hudson cherry and ripe strawberry. Hints of clove and anise roll throughout from first taste to silky finish.
2016 Walter Hansel, Cahill Lane, Russian River Valley
Pale to medium ruby-purple colored, the 2016 Pinot Noir Cahill Lane gives up a beautifully earthy nose of truffles, black soil and mossy bark with a core of warm cherries, black raspberries and red plums. Medium to full-bodied, it coats the palate with red berries and plum-inspired layers, framed by fine-grained tannins and great freshness, finishing long and earthy.
