The Seventh Playing of The Women’s Traveling Cup Scotland – 2018! May 16 – 25
February 2, 2018
Dear Women’s Traveling Cup Friends,
The dates have been set for The Seventh Playing of The Women’s Traveling Cup – Scotland 2018! And you are cordially invited to join us as The Cup returns to Scotland for the 2018 Matches. After a few years of The Women’s Traveling Cup played on our home soil, we’re excited about the opportunities presented on this special itinerary!
We will begin in Edinburgh at the lovely Balmoral Hotel, located right in the heart of this historic town. Our first round will be on the West Links of North Berwick, where golf has been played since the 17th Century. A leader in golf for Women, the North Berwick Ladies Golf Club was formed in 1888 and the original “Ladies Links” is still used today for Junior Golf. Several of the holes on the West Links have been copied the world over, none more so than the 15th … “The Redan Hole”.
We will depart Edinburgh and head North to the Scottish Highlands with a stop along the way for a round of golf on the Queens Course at Gleneagles. Of the four courses on the grounds of the Gleneagles Estate, the Queens Course with it’s natural beauty and moorland characteristics stands out as one of our favorites!
After golf on the Queens, we will continue North to the Scottish Highlands and the 5-star Rocpool Reserve Hotel … our home for the next three nights. Located in the heart of Inverness, the Rocpool is a restored Georgian Mansion and is within walking distance from the city center. In addition to the luxury accommodations, the Rocpool is the perfect location to visit two of the Scottish Highlands’ great golf courses, Royal Dornoch and Castle Stuart.
Dornoch holds an elite place on golf history. Golf in Dornoch can be traced back to 1616. The Royal Dornoch Golf Club was founded in 1877. Shortly after the Club invited Old Tom Morris to look over the land and expand the links. And in 1906, the Club attained it’s Royal status from King Edward VII. Dornoch’s most notable son, Donald Ross, not only impacted the game in his native Scotland but also in America. Born on November 23rd 1872 on St Gilbert Street, Ross was educated in Dornoch and as a young man was the “Keeper of the Greens” at the Club. He later became the first Golf Professional at Dornoch and went on to become one of the finest golf architects to design courses in America, Scotland, Canada and Cuba. The Course at Royal Dornoch was just rated as the Number 2 Course in the world by Golf Digest and we are excited for the Women’s Traveling Cup to make it’s inaugural appearance at Royal Dornoch Golf Club.
Overlooking the Moray Firth, Castle Stuart Golf Links opened in 2009 and quickly made a name for itself. Since it’s opening it has been recognized as a world class venue and currently ranked 56 in GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 Courses in the World. It has hosted the Scottish Open three times since 2012 … it’s that good!
After golf at Castle Stuart and our final night in Inverness, we will travel South on the lovely A-9 back to St. Andrews. There we will stay at The Old Course Hotel, overlooking the famed Road Hole – the 17th hole of the Old Course, notably known as being the most difficult hole in Championship Golf. On the following day we will have a game at The Castle Course, the seventh course at St. Andrews and the first to be built in that town in over 100 years. The course sits high on a bluff overlooking the town of St. Andrews and is a great walk for the golf and the beauty. And we will end our Matches with a round on The Old Course … the oldest and most iconic course in the world! Bobby Jones may have said it best when he spoke of The Old Course, "The more I studied the Old Course, the more I loved it, and the more I loved it, the more I studied it, so that I came to feel that it was for me the most favorite meeting ground possible for an important match!" A fitting place to conclude the Seventh Playing of The Women’s Traveling Cup – Scotland 2018!
