"Strangely enough, the eagle is not the king of birds. That honor was conferred on the clever and resourceful wren back in ancient times. Legends describe the little wren as a bird of prophesy, the guardian of sailors, a winged creature who stole fire from the sun. Each of our wines tell one of these mythic tales. We invite you to drink well and read along -- ornithology was never our passion but we do appreciate a riveting bird story." Wren Hop Vineyards

Wren Hop Vineyards

Wren Hop was founded by advertising executives, father and son, James and Jim McDonough. Their passion for wine and their flair for the creative have drawn attention from the wine world and high praise from wine critiques Robert Parker and the Wine Spectator. The McDonoughs have assembled a talented wine team and consistently deliver fabulous wines that are truly represent their terroir and their whimsical labels tell stories of the Wren.

The Wines

2012 Chardonnay, Needle’s Eye, Sonoma Coast
Needle’s Eye Chardonnay from tiny, cool weather Bennett Valley is a perfect blend of brightness and toasted brioche richness. Made from the Wente Clone, the wine shows a floral nose of jasmine and wet stone that morph into an explosion of lush citrus flavors with rich textures. Tropical notes of tangerine, honeysuckle, vanilla bean, minerals and barrel spice meld together seamlessly to create some serious Chard lover alchemy. The wine finishes with a perfect balance of ripe fruit, minerality and crispness.

2012 Pinot Noir, Demigods & Demons, Green Valley
A regular by the glass selection at the club, the 2012 Demigods & Demons is a Pinot with some serious black fruit. A deep ruby hue leads to aromatics of rose pedals and red hibiscus tea. Black currant, dried cranberry, red licorice and clove can be found lurking mid-palate where they lie in wait to stage gustatory ambush. This is hardly a shy wine so alert your taste buds in advance. Demigod or Demon? You decide.

2012 Pinot Noir, Royalty in Exile, Russian River Valley
The 2012 Russian River Valley "Royalty in Exile" estate wine flexes its muscle with vibrant flavors of ripe red cherry, juicy blackberry and organic “just picked” strawberry. Barrel spice is nicely displayed in the mid-palate and notes of orange peel and subtle tannin appear in the persistent finish. This is one powerful, deeply structured wine not to be missed. Gather friends worthy of your generosity and send the rest into exile!

2012 Pinot Noir, Daughters of the Earth, Sonoma Coast
Aromatics of fresh earth, rich strawberry and floral oil. The Palate shows stewed black cherry, freshly crushed raspberry, toasted spice, licorice and herbal notes along with traces of blood orange. The wine finishes with a juicy acidity, silky tannins and a Jimi Hendrix crescendo style reverb finish.

2012 Pinot Noir, Mortal Coil, Sonoma Coast
Brooding deep ruby color with rich mulling spice aromatics. Mocha, black cherry, Assam tea and earth drive the mid-palate. There is an exceptional long, energetic finish to this wine. Queue up your favorite playlist, this classic Pinot has all the hallmarks of former standouts. Truly a wine that will not be ignored, this bottling amplifies even more after a short decant. Turn up the Sonos and get to work. Steak au Poivre will be waiting patiently for an introduction in the kitchen.
