DuMOL
Robert Parker says “I would have to rank DuMOL as one of my favorite half dozen producers of California Chardonnay as well as one of the top twenty in terms of Pinot Noir. Moreover, their Syrah program is also impressive".
Since its beginning in 1996, DuMOL has had a stellar lineup of wines which today includes Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Viognier. Partners Kerry Murphy, Andy Smith, and Michael Verlander tend to lead a low profile with very minimal public exposure and let their wines speak for themselves. They believe in blending but also produce outstanding single-vineyard wines. The single-vineyard wines are not named after the principals or the vineyards, but instead they use the names of their family members. Most of the grapes are sourced from the Green Valley appellation where DuMOL also has an estate vineyard, with other grape sources in the Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, and Carneros. Contracts are long-term and grapes are paid for by the acre, insuring that yields can be restricted.
The winemaker and viticulturist since 2000 is talented Andy Smith who became a partner in the winery in 2005. Prior to coming to DuMOL, he studied under Neil McCallum (Dry River, Martinborough), Ted Lemon (Littorai), and Paul Hobbs.
A Special Offer:
Dumol is moving to their 2013 releases this May. Kerry has opened his library and has made available some outstanding older vintages for our Members. Wine notes below are from Robert Parker.
The Wines
2012 Russian River Chardonnay
"The 2012 Chardonnay Russian River (4,360 cases) was aged on its lees in one-third new French oak for 11 months and underwent full malolactic fermentation. A six-vineyard blend, it is composed primarily of the Old Wente clone as well as Mt. Eden and a handful of others. Nearly 50% comes from the Dutton Vineyard and the rest from the Heintz, DuMOL Estate, Lorenzo, Ritchie and a few others. Like most of the DuMOL Chardonnays, it reveals a greenish hue to its color as well as attractive aromas of orange blossom, delicate pineapple, wet pebbles and fresh acids in its medium to full-bodied, surprisingly concentrated, heady personality. This big-time winner should age nicely for 7-8 years." 92 points
2010 Chardonnay, isobel, Charles Heintz Vineyard, Russian River Valley
"The 2010 Chardonnay Isobel Charles Heintz Vineyard is racy, elegant and perfumed. The long growing season yielded a focused wine that nicely balances richness and minerality. Hints of dried apricots, pears, light floral honey and herbs add complexity in the bright, focused finish. Here, too, there is a touch of botrytis that adds complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020." 92 points
2011 Pinot Noir, Green Valley/Russian River Vineyards, Russian River Valley
"The beautiful 2011 Pinot Noir Russian River, a nine vineyard blend, was made from four clonal selections, the Dijon, Swan, Mt. Eden and Calera clones. Its dark plum/ruby hue is accompanied by notes of sassafras, black currants, licorice and a hint of lavender. This medium to full-bodied, velvety textured, lush, heady, evolved Pinot was aged 11 months on its lees in 35% new French oak. Drink it over the next 4-5 years." 90 points
2011 Pinot Noir, ryan, Dutton-Widdoes Vineyard, Russian River Valley
"This wine is a brilliant dark-rose color showing intense dark fruit aromas of black raspberry, boysenberry, and kirsch. Typical Widdoes vineyard complexity takes hold with tarragon, black olive, soy, and truffle. The wine is bright and fresh on the palate, broad, yet soft and enveloping. The palate shows dark fruit that is complex, yet, never heavy. There is a generous, broad finish with lifting fresh acidity." 90-92 points
2009 Syrah, Russian River Valley
"The 2009 Syrah shows immediate complexity of sweet and savory aromas with white and black pepper, cassis, blue fruits, dried Provencal herbs, smoked meat, balsamic and floral notes. Forward, soft, ripe fruit appears on the palate...juicy and plush. Blueberry and boysenberry then savory notes take hold with tapenade, soy, graphite, thyme and Lavender. The wine has a long and expanding finish." No rating.
2010 Syrah, eddie’s patch, Hoppe-Kelly Vineyard, Russian River Valley
"The 2010 Syrah Eddie’s Patch represents great Syrah. Aged 17 months on its lees in 43% new French oak, this inky/purple-colored Syrah offers a big, sweet kiss of charcoal, truffle, blackberries, licorice, roasted meats, and bouquet garni. The blackberry component continues on the palate of this full-bodied, superbly textured, rich, savory Syrah. Drink this mouth-filling 2010 over the next decade or more." This wine received 96 points and is showing beautifully.
