An Update from our Golf Course Superintendent, Dale Engman

The atmospheric river we experienced this past week has been incredible, with the Club receiving 15.11" of rain in just three days. We saw an unprecedented amount of rain in such a short time! The Golf Course was closed Thursday, November 21st and Friday, November 22nd due to unplayable conditions, but fortunately we were able to reopen the course Saturday after the rains subsided just in time for our St. Andrew's Day Foursome Medal Tournament! Saturday was a spectacular day with the sun finally coming out and Members getting to golf again after a remarkable stretch of weather.

Many of you may have noticed some ongoing projects around the Golf Course, and I wanted to provide you an update on those. Throughout the past few months, especially since Fall aeration, we have worked steadily on removing unwanted grass types from areas closest to the greens. This includes approaches and wrap-arounds.  We have also been leveling and re-grassing select tees, which is all part of our commitment to keeping our playing surfaces free of Poa annua, or annual bluegrass. With our preferred grass types being bentgrass greens and perennial ryegrass, we implement multiple methods for keeping our most important areas free from Poa and other unwanted grass types.

The stripping and re-grassing of approaches and wrap-arounds are all part of this effort. Over time, unwanted grasses can gain a foothold and occasionally need to be removed and we have to re-establish our desired grasses. Fall is a great time for this work as it allows for a quick recovery and establishment as we head into winter.

We have also been working on leveling and regrassing select tees. These areas also are susceptible to the same encroachment of grasses mentioned above. Tees however, also have a tendency to become unlevel over time from continual divots, seeding, and topdressing. The result we see once tees have been leveled is very rewarding with new turf and perfectly level teeing areas!

The other process, and maybe most important, we have undertaken is the removal of Poa from our putting surfaces. We have an exciting new tool available called Poa Cure. It is a relatively new product to the market and after several trials, we did our first application on all of our greens this Fall. The results have been very encouraging. Areas where Poa had become established we have seen slowly wither and disappear. It is really quite remarkable. We are excited and hopeful that these plants have in fact "checked-out" and will not come back, but we will have to wait and see what returns in the Spring. It is exciting to see this process take effect but one aspect of this process that will take time to recover are the bare areas where Poa once was. We now have some very thin/bare areas where Poa has died and the bentgrass has not yet recovered. Our plan now is to continue to push and grow the bentgrass to fill in those areas. This will take some time, but we are confident it will fill in and we will be left with clean, pure greens.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this period of noticeable work; we are excited to have the Course in the best shape it can be! — Dale

TOURNAMENT RESULTS
St. Andrew's Day Foursome Medal

This year’s St. Andrew’s Day Foursome Medal Tournament proved to be a true test of golf. A big round of applause to all who braved the elements — it was truly a tournament to remember! We echo the sentiment from many Members who played; the course was in phenomenal condition, especially considering the 15+ inches of rain it endured the week prior.

This year, we had the pleasure of seeing some new champions rise to the occasion. In the Mayacama Flight, Mike Feeney and Sheri Perezchica edged out Matthew Frome and Guy Lampard by two strokes, finishing with a net 74. Meanwhile, in the Championship Flight, Matt Vukicevich and Mark Martin played exceptional golf, leading the field by six strokes to claim victory over runners-up Ryan and Greg Bello with a gross score of 73.

Congratulations to all the winners and participants!
