Beckstoffer To Kalon Through
The Lens of Boich Family Cellar

If there is one vineyard site in Napa Valley that critics and connoisseurs hold in the highest regard for Cabernet Sauvignon, it is without a doubt Oakville’s To Kalon (pronounced "TOE kah-LON").

Boich Family Wines has become synonymous with blue chip rated Cabernet Sauvignon from the legendary 89-acre parcel, and today produces 3 separate wines from vineyards owned by the famed Napa Valley land owner, Andy Beckstoffer.

The story of To Kalon dates all the way back to 1868 when the vineyard was originally established by a gentleman named H.W. Crabb. Greek for “the highest beauty,” To Kalon was largely considered to be one of the most ambitious viticultural efforts of the 19th century. By the time of Crabb’s death in 1899, the planted acreage of To Kalon was 359.

Following Crabb’s death, the vineyard was left to the Churchill family, who managed the property until 1943, the year it was acquired by Martin Stelling. Stelling was an ambitious budding vintner who would have been a major force in Napa’s history had he not died prematurely in a car crash in 1950. By the time of his death, he owned over 2,000 acres of prime Napa vineyard land.

Immediately after his purchase, Stelling sold an 89-acre parcel of To Kalon to Beaulieu Vineyard. This parcel would become known as BV #4 and was a critical component of the winery’s famous Georges de Latour Private Reserve bottling.

In 1993, this vineyard was purchased from Beaulieu by Andy Beckstoffer, who attempted to restore its original name. He was quickly sued by Robert Mondavi and forced by the court to append his surname to the historic name. Now known as Beckstoffer To Kalon, this site produces some of the most desired and highly-priced Cabernet Sauvignon in all of Napa Valley.

Today’s Mayacama wine offer provides members with access to a three-vintage vertical composition of Boich Family Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon from the famed Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard; ’17, ’18, ’19 (one bottle from each vintage).

2017 is the inaugural vintage for Boich Family’s Beckstoffer To Kalon bottling and so it’s not only a great honor to be able to provide members with library access, but it’s also an extremely rare opportunity.

Additionally, our beloved Vintner Member John Boich has opened up this offer to include Magnum (1.5L) bottles of each vintage of Beckstoffer To Kalon produced thus far (’17, ’18, ‘19). Only five magnums from each vintage are available.

I’m extremely excited about this offer and so please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

As always, thank you for your continued support.

Cheers!

Carey Vanderborg, Wine Director
